General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI use the nextdoor app for my neighborhood...
it was once a place to talk neighborhood stuff, sell/give away stuff, get to know those around you, etc...
but now, since covid, it's become a cesspool of antivaxxers.
so many people I've had to mute to maintain my sanity.
it's really bad. so bad, that I might finally dump it all together.
how's been your experience?

(11,004 posts)I call it Suburban White Paranoia. Mine is all "why are there brown people walking down the street," "the homeless have wrecked our wonderful neighborhood and are spreading disease" and "Owls are eating our pets!"
Fortunately the few anti-vaxxers in mine are shut down pretty quick because the neighborhood moderator has no patience for it and removes their posts.
There is an option to report the posts for spreading anti-vaxx nonsense - I use that pretty liberally.

It definitely was interesting on who's trigger happy. Guns and just verbally, their triggers are wound too tight.
There was a lot of suspicious people walking down the street posts and a lot of if they come to my house I'll blow em away replies.
It also helps you to know who these people are, especially since they make you use your real name. I probably would have skirted had I not replied to post and I guess someone narced on me. My mate still has his account and informs me of the cra-cras around the hood.

(17,982 posts)Called the ones who owned the board. They put a stop to it.
We just now had another. A Poster was asking about a man in her neighborhood board out ranting against The Government. A poster asked if he walked stiff legged. That began a flood gate. One posted an article from Gateway Pundit I informed her that was exactly who there was a neighborhood board rule. But received several thanks.! She got all huffy with me talking about how that was censorship..
I left it alone

(9,352 posts)I get occasional useful information. Mostly seems like a marketplace.
I dont really get that many notifications.
Most MAGATs get shut down quickly.

(15,220 posts)When I first joined, like you, it was an informative and generally useful site. But it quickly turned to a bunch of Trumpers (Im in Texas!) touting crap, and after alerting them to Nextdoor because there was a no politics rule at least at that time, and nothing being done, I stopped using it.
I get an invitation every once in a while to rejoin and that gives me the means to view posts (but not comment).
Its still all political crap as well as the endless lost animal posts which break my heart. You let your cat run around the neighborhood unsupervised and he doesnt come home and youre surprised? Your beloved dog got out the ONE time he doesnt have his collar and tags on, and youve been meaning to get him chipped but hadnt
yeah, sure. Lather. Rinse. Repeat.
I find life less stressful being away from Nextdoor.

(31,798 posts)they were using it to whine about black folks and latino folks just like - being in their yard.
Yeah - I found myself - because some asshole over the border (PA) drove through my town. Thank god he didn't call the police on me for weeding my flower beds.

(2,220 posts)to see if anything major happened in the neighborhood that I should know about, but I dont participate. Its mostly folks selling stuff and complaining about the neighborhood being overrun with deer..which it is.

(19,024 posts)There is good done on Nextdoor. People who need help getting it, people who need help finding a lost pet getting it. It's good place to buy and sell used stuff.
You've got to take the bad with the good. The antivax stuff on mine gets removed by Admins almost immediately. But then there is always the, "brown people are walking down my street" garbage you have to try to ignore.
I saw a lot of people getting help around the Holidays from complete strangers, was good to see.

(14,176 posts)but we have tons of people making disparaging remarks about the homeless and posting about anyone who looks at them "suspiciously." Nothing has been more successful in making me hate my neighbors than that app.

(32,620 posts)I happen to live in the city of Pittsburgh where most of us are registered Democratic voters. Most of our neighborhoods are 50% white and 50% black and we're fine with that. Any racist families moved the suburbs probably 30 years ago.
Our Nextdoor seems to have a lot of helpful posts, some are complainers, but most are encouraging. I don't see much in the way of political comments on there. I'm not a frequent poster on Nextdoor but I do get notifications almost daily. It seems like some Nextdoor posters treat it like Facebook - they're on all day long. Well OK, I'm on DU a lot so I don't need to spend much time on Nextdoor. God forbid I should ever go on Facebook again.

(21,857 posts)you'd think there are drugged out homeless people just waiting to pounce on you at every turn. And as soon as someone complains you get all the "well you voted for this person, so this is what you get" type posts. It's just too political.
Yeah, it's good for lost pets. Also, good for reports of bobcats in the neighborhood.

(5,164 posts)For cat rescue. We live in a county that voted for dump and voted Zeldin in so plenty of humpers. There were some nice people too but mostly nutsos. When I discovered they broadcast your location I left and disabled that. It was too hard to delete some of the posts that I made about rescue etc. though so someone could still find out my location from that unfortunately. I recommend that nobody join Nextdoor because they broadcast the exact location where you live and make it available to everyone. There were some hilarious posts about potholes though which made me laugh- we have a huge problem with our roads and repair, huge and numerous potholes which are never properly repaired. The county is run by a bunch of crooks mostly.

(3,313 posts)Though mine's a smaller, rural neighborhood; and we all know each other-- that may be why no one loses their shit online-- we have to see each other in-person more often than most urban and suburban residents do.
All in all though, it's a pretty cool resource. My gf loves it, and finds bake-, garage- and yard-sales to drag me to.
