CORVALLIS, Ore. Compounds found in hemp "show the ability to prevent the virus that causes COVID-19 from entering human cells," Oregon State University says.
New OSU research on hemp and COVID-19 was published Tuesday in the Journal of Natural Products.
Richard van Breemen, a researcher with Oregon States Global Hemp Innovation Center in the College of Pharmacy and Linus Pauling Institute, led the study.
According to OSU:
Hemp, known scientifically as Cannabis sativa, is a source of fiber, food and animal feed, and multiple hemp extracts and compounds are added to cosmetics, body lotions, dietary supplements and food, van Breemen said.
Van Breemen and collaborators, including scientists at Oregon Health & Science University, found that a pair of cannabinoid acids bind to the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, blocking a critical step in the process the virus uses to infect people.
The compounds are cannabigerolic acid, or CBGA, and cannabidiolic acid, CBDA, and the spike protein is the same drug target used in COVID-19 vaccines and antibody therapy. A drug target is any molecule critical to the process a disease follows, meaning its disruption can thwart infection or disease progression.
These cannabinoid acids are abundant in hemp and in many hemp extracts, van Breemen said. They are not controlled substances like THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, and have a good safety profile in humans. And our research showed the hemp compounds were equally effective against variants of SARS-CoV-2, including variant B.1.1.7, which was first detected in the United Kingdom, and variant B.1.351, first detected in South Africa.

because this weed nowadays is way stronger than what it used to be back in the day and I don't have time to be that high for so long.
It's lasts as long as acid used to. But maybe if I smoke just half a joint...

(1,666 posts)Ill smoke a pipe, have a dab of wax, take a gummy, maybe have a suck on the vape as well, along with my 15 mg buspirone, and be good to go about my day for a few hours, before we need to reset my social anxiety again.
Unless you are hyper aware and can tell any small tell signs, youd never know I had a relaxing high going. Wasnt always like that though. Now I dont even get the munchies. I can go about my daily errands normally.
Cannabis is the perfect drug. No hang overs, doesnt get in the way of your life (once youve got your tolerance). Everyday we here more bad news about how life is going, is just another day to me. Another nice side effect of having a 24/7, 365/day never ending high. For a few years now. I wish it was more easily available when I was younger (at least for me). I gave up alcohol years ago; the core opposite drug of weed
one you cant live life normally while using 24/7. A destructive, nasty drug.
And to top it all off, it maybe an extra layer of protection from Covid over my 3 shots and flu shot.

(53,764 posts)I would have to build up my tolerance, like you said, for the more potent weed out there now. And if it helps combat covid, all the better.

(3,313 posts)Way (way!) back in the early eighties in high school, we'd skip lunch and share a joint among the three of us in the parking lot (just typing that, I can smell the unique mix of leaking car oil, pot and Polo on a muggy afternoon).
During a camping trip earlier this year, someone brought a bomber joint of this new stuff and I thought to myself, 'hey, what the hell. Why not?'. Four or five puffs later (literally!), I was talking to a tree, thinking I could almost understand it and wondering what kind of music a pecan tree would be into.
Slept pretty soundly that night.

(20,868 posts)I wonder if Delta-8 THC would work?
I just received a notice yesterday giving me $50 off on an order of it for less than $20!
Might be just the thing we need!

Thanks anyway, but I'll follow the findings of qualified researchers and scientists instead.

(17,191 posts)These cannabinoid acids are abundant in hemp and in many hemp extracts, lead researcher Richard van Breemen said in a statement. They are not controlled substances like THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, and have a good safety profile in humans.
The compounds are precursors to more well-known hemp-derived substances such as CBD and CBG, but are typically not contained in hemp products, according to van Breemen. More research is needed to find the correct dosage for human consumption, he added.
Smoking cannabis does not offer any protection from the virus that causes COVID-19.
"The benefit for preventing viral infection of cells must come from cannabinoid acids, which are heat sensitive and must not be smoked, or it would convert them to CBD and so forth," van Breemen said. "So that wouldn't work for the antiviral effect."
The study tested the effectiveness of the compounds against the original, alpha and beta strains of SARS-CoV-2, according to the news release, but not more recent variants such as delta and omicron.
"I don't think the compounds in hemp are the answer to the pandemic, but rather part of the solution," van Breemen said.

(2,574 posts)What Is Full-Spectrum CBD?
Full-spectrum CBD is a substance that contains all of the extracts naturally found in the cannabis plant, including very small amounts of THC, the psychoactive ingredient associated with the marijuana high.

Lots of edible hemp products containing CBDA and CBGA on the market out there.
25 mg a day keeps the doctor away?

(22,652 posts)obviously it works for me. They need to legalize and do some actual research. We could have the possibility of finding cures for many diseases!
