New York (CNN Business)The US Chamber of Commerce is calling for doubling the number of legal immigrants into America as a way to ease inflation and the worker shortage.
"We need more workers. We should welcome people who want to come here, go to school and stay," Chamber of Commerce CEO Suzanne Clark told reporters during a press conference on Tuesday. "That is a place the government could be particularly helpful and we do believe it would be anti-inflationary."
Clark added that ramping up immigration would help to ease the supply chain disruptions that are at the heart of the inflation spike, including the shortage of truck drivers.
"If we can alleviate the worker shortage, it might be the fastest thing to do to impact inflation," Clark said.
Since all those wall building jobs didn't work out.

(2,403 posts)This country is addicted to the concept of cheap labor. It always has been and always will be. I guess when you start off building your country on the backs of slavery it is just too hard to do things ethically in under a couple hundred years timeframe.

(997 posts)Of course the prices will be kept higher but labor cost will go down thereby increasing the profits of the companies they speak for.

(7,546 posts)Immigrants want to come legally work here but the number of allowed visas is maxed out and they have to have a confirmed job offer to even apply. Was just reading there are around 4,000 foreign registered nurses stuck in limbo by the visa process, all have jobs waiting here if they ever get approved.

All sorts of visa workers are stuck in the process for jobs the media keeps reporting on shortages, like home health aides, nurses, doctors, healthcare workers, and more. Even truck drivers, port workers, and teachers. Immigrants and visa workers are less afraid of getting COVID than being unable to feed their kids.
I've noticed less anti-H1B threads posted lately

(20,647 posts)clueless AF wingnuts who've been caterwauling for months and months about "WHY IS NOBODY SHOWING UP FOR WORK?????", have totally refused to acknowledge the lack of immigrants available to fill these roles as the result of the pandemic.

(47,489 posts)many parts of the US supply chain are dependent on immigrant workers. It could be a good way to include a pathway to citizenship and help many businesses get workers.
The thing is many employers have enjoyed screwing their workers during recession and lean times. So when workers find something better they leave, or retire early. So there are tons of jobs where the bosses like to screw workers but Americans are tired of getting screwed.
Many people have reevaluated their priorities in life during this pandemic as they are faced with the possibility of serious illness or death.
