"We want fewer Black teachers"

Tweet text:

Weird how "we just want to block obscure legal theories about race" morphed into "we want to exclude Black authors" and now "we want fewer Black teachers"

Mike Hixenbaugh
@Mike_Hixenbaugh
Here's a newly elected anti-CRT school board member at CyFair ISD, the third largest school district in Texas, suggesting at a meeting on Monday that Houston ISD has worse student outcomes because the district has more Black teachers.

My sister has a grandson n granddaughter in that school district. I would love to know how she feels about this but she n my nephew are Trumpers so I may never know. If it were me, I’d start a petition to recall this guy. There is no place in our country for this bs..even in Harris County, Texas.

Just straight-up racism.

I'm the Gen-X Sesame Street generation.
I was fooled by liberal media that I was the citizen of a much better nation than it apparently ever was.

I'm just sad.
Well, angry and sad.

On edit: I want to stress that I don't blame Sesame Street for fooling me. I was a child and believed the inclusiveness I saw on the screen reflected reality.

My first Black teacher was in 7th Grade in '67 JHS in NYC.

What's actually interesting is she was teaching Science.
Maybe a partial surprise as a Black person looking back but as a woman back then for science! That's rather surprising, imho.

I Iiked her. I remember 2 classes in particular, too.

In school districts where there the students are 95% white, there should be MORE than 5% non-white. And in schools that are 95% black there should be a majority black teachers, but there should be a good amount of white, Hispanic and Asian teachers also. All students should have an opportunity to have enough teachers of all races to get the idea that not all people of another race are bad.

I totally agree with these sentiments. However the teachers' pay scales don't reflect that in the real world.

We both know that the high-income mostly-white school districts can afford well above average teacher salaries. While the inner city schools that are 50% black (or higher) can only afford the base scale of salaries for teachers. The good news is that there are way more openings in the poorer rural and inner-city school districts. So recent graduates who can't get a foot in the door of the suburban districts can hopefully get their start in the inner city schools. Think of "Welcome Back Kotter" - I believe that some gifted teachers would actually do well in that environment.

It also means that minority teachers would have a difficult time getting positions in the better-paying suburban school districts. I wish it weren't like that, and there should be a fairer way to redistribute the teaching talent among all the schools of a given area. It seems that once a teacher gets "in" with a good district, they stay until they retire.

Without a doubt, the students benefit from contact with non-white/minority teachers when they do get the chance to interact with them.

based on performance expectations. They do not value the mind as a critical processor of information able to evaluate different ideas and outcomes. They see the mind as a kind of adding machine in which you put information and it always adds up the same.

Their model of the smarter child is a white monkey who can memorize and spit out specific answers on command. They do not want children to ask questions that are not pre-approved in the dogma of White Christian Nationalism. They do not want them to learn answers which are not in the dogma either.

Teachers who are different (Black) from the board members and their owners (Oh yeah they are. Just ask DeVos) represent a nonconformity to the status quo of the false history and culture they believe in and wish to inculcate into the (white) school children.

It doesn’t help to have racists on the Board. Someone concerned with education would not be making such stupid comments.

As background, HISD is one of the largest school districts in the country, and like many large systems (LA, Hillsborough County, Fla.), it struggles from what I think is the sheer weight of trying to get over 210,000 students at nearly 300 schools all on the same program when many of them come from poor families and have limited English skills. Student native languages number more than 100, and nearly 90% of students come from economically disadvantaged families.

Such a large school system requires a very large number of non-teaching staff to oversee all its schools and parts. I have long believed that it does not really save money to consolidate local schools into huge school districts because the individuality is lost and money that could be spent on teachers is spent on overhead for district staff who teach nothing but are hired to manage a small piece of the schools. I haven’t done the research, but from my years in education, I remember zero large school districts being successful at their purpose—education. Just another way public education has been hampered in this country—make it impossible to succeed and for-profit charger schools look more attractive. Most of then are out of business before parents realize that their children got a substandard education.

Housing patterns and how district boundaries are drawn still result in most schools being more black or white than their counties as a whole.

not matter how segregated neighborhoods were. Thus, busing. School districts were mandated by federal court order to maintain racial desegregation. I'd assume those mandates are still in force.

This surprises me so little.
There's a strong minority of white families out in that area on the outskirts of Houston. They're not a majority and they're not all liberal, but they know this mentality, this language evolving from dog whistle to outright hate mongering is poisonous.

Now that the Maga movement is showing how hateful it can be, these are the voters we can pick up and flip--not all of them, but enough to make a difference. We have to just keep on shining a spotlight on them and exposing their lies.
