John Pavlovitz: Why I've Lost Respect For My Republican Friends

https://johnpavlovitz.com/2021/12/11/why-ive-lost-respect-for-my-republican-friends/

*snip*

It’s only very recently that I realized that they already are aware:

They know their party tried to violently overthrow the Government and overturn an election, and is still actively perpetuating the big lie.

They know they are willfully prolonging the pandemic by shunning safeguards and opposing vaccines and peddling disinformation.

They know they’re gerrymandering and suppressing votes and installing corrupt electors because they can’t win elections any other way.

They know their party is fully infected with Proud Boy, KKK white supremacist domestic terrorism.

They know it is filled with unqualified, unstable sociopaths like Lauren Boebert, Matt Gaetz, Madison Cawthorn, and Marjorie Taylor Greene.

They know Donald Trump is a lying, vile, incompetent, traitorous monster who hasn’t had a noble instinct in his lifetime.

They know that their party is on balance, anti-immigrant, anti-Muslim, anti-LGBT, anti-Semitic, and anti-women.

They know all these things.

They just don’t care.

2. Not only do they, in fact, care ... actually, they love all those things ...

They're features, not bugs.

3. That's because they are those things. It's not simply a case of their party is doing this or that -

- they do those things. They are those things.

They are - anti-immigrant, anti-Muslim, anti-LGBT, anti-Semitic, and anti-women, etc..

Nothing the GOP has done, is doing, or will do is separate from those who vote for them.

4. Well, yes. But they are also dog whistles

and chum for the waters. Wedge issues. Really think that a lot of our political elite give a flying fajita about school board meetings, or what the lesson plans are for the local K-12? Anti-vax militants? Border walls? (one of the more inane ideas to come along in the last 20 years) But they'll sure as hell exploit it to their advantage!

5. This is a great article

that you don't see talked about enough, that Hillary raised with the 'basket of deplorables' speech. Any time anyone tries to raise the issue of the rot within the Republican base (and not just with the leaders or RW media) there is immediate pushback of 'Why are you demonizing regular Americans?' and so the conversation ends.

The fact remains that this is who GOP voters are: 75% or more of Republicans (who are not just the far right, but your typical Reagan Republican) believe in Trump's Big Lie. About 70% want Trump to run again in 2024.

This is not just a difference of political opinion, but of a struggle of democracy vs autocracy, and autocrats cannot (should not) be respected or reasoned with.

8. I stopped associating with Republicans, in any way, to the best of my ability,

Republican = fascist. Just another Nazi waiting to happen.
