Cops Say Man Faked Death to Evade Justice but Was Caught While Hospitalized With COVID-19

BY ASSOCIATED PRESS JANUARY 14, 2022 3:16 PM EST

(PROVIDENCE, R.I.)— A Rhode Island man who is believed to have faked his death and fled the U.S. to evade prosecution in Utah and other states has been apprehended in Scotland after being hospitalized with COVID-19, authorities said.

Nicholas Alahverdian was discovered after developing a serious case of the coronavirus and being placed on a ventilator at a hospital in Glasgow, Rhode Island State Police Maj. Robert Creamer told The Providence Journal on Wednesday. Alahverdian, 34, who had been a vocal critic of Rhode Island’s child welfare system in recent years, now faces extradition to the U.S. to face a charge of first-degree rape in Utah.

Court documents unsealed Thursday show Alahverdian met a 21-year-old woman on MySpace in 2008, when he was living in Orem, Utah, and going by the name Nicholas Rossi, WPRI-TV reported. The woman said that she ended the relationship, but that Alahverdian owed her money, promised to pay her back and instead sexually assaulted her in his apartment.

Utah County Attorney David Leavitt’s office said Wednesday that DNA evidence collected at the time wasn’t tested until 2017 as part of a state effort to test backlogged rape kits. The Utah evidence was ultimately came back as a match to a sexual assault case in Ohio.

Utah court documents detail rape charge against Nicholas Alahverdian

In December 2019, just weeks before Nicholas Alahverdian began spinning a lie to Rhode Island reporters of his impending death, a Utah investigator called an Ohio FBI agent regarding Alahverdian’s whereabouts.

The FBI had a warrant for Alahverdian’s arrest on charges he defrauded his foster father by taking out credit cards in his name and running up debts totaling more than $200,000.

Utah officials were looking for him for an alleged rape, court records show.

The FBI agent said he had actually recently spoken with Alahverdian, who had told the agent: “He was living in Ireland because there is a non-extradition treaty with the United States.”

Rhode Island man who faked his own death to avoid 2008 sexual assault charges found alive in Scotland: officials
KATE FELDMAN - Yesterday 12:42 PM

An online obituary includes Nicholas Alahverdian’s last words: “Fear not and run toward the bliss of the sun.”

Alahverdian, 34, died on Feb. 29, 2020 with his wife, two children and extended family by his side, just two months after revealing his non-Hodgkin lymphoma diagnosis, according to the obituary.

He spent decades in Rhode Island fighting against abusive Department of Children Youth and Families practices after being sexually abused in their custody as a child. He was a painter, author, amateur ornithologist, political scientist, sociologist, accomplished orator, and child welfare reform advocate. His death was publicly mourned by state senators, mayors and reporters.

After his death, his ashes were scattered at sea.

Except, officials said Wednesday, Alahverdian didn’t die at all.

Dreading and Hoping All
Released October 24, 2019

Read Dreading and Hoping All here for free courtesy of the Internet Archive

In a true story of survival, Harvard scholar Nicholas Alahverdian transports the reader from working in the Rhode Island State House to the chambers of a senile Family Court Judge appointed by a corrupt governor. When Alahverdian exposes widespread abuse, he is sent hundreds of miles away to a Florida treatment center where he was tortured, overmedicated, and allowed to contact no one.

Dreading and Hoping All Nicholas Alahverdian

Nicholas Alahverdian (1987-2020) battled for over a decade of how and when to write his memoirs about attending Harvard University and working for the government. Alahverdian decided to not take a linear approach to writing his memoir because authoring microbooks in collaboration with his researcher and aides proved to be an exciting project among voracious readers. The first volume is “Dreading and Hoping All.”

In these books, Nicholas Alahverdian intends to cover everything about his exciting life at Harvard, in politics, at the Capitol, and elsewhere in multiple microbooks that will range from 25-125 pages. In Dreading and Hoping All, Nicholas Alahverdian, with his blatant nonlinear approach, begins to bare his soul about the political machinations that resulted in his being sent hundreds of miles away from home where he was prevented from attending school or contacting anyone who could save him from the daily torture and child abuse he suffered in DCYF (Department of Children, Youth and Families) care.

He was reported dead, but the Rhode Island police kept looking for Nick Alahverdian
Tom Mooney
The Providence Journal

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – State Rep. Raymond Hull spoke to the state police detective in July. He says he remembers the officer’s first question so clearly, because it sounded so preposterous.

"He asked me, ‘Do you think this Nicholas Alahverdian is still alive?’”

Alahverdian, a critic of the state’s child welfare program who had pushed lawmakers like Hull to support reforms, died of cancer five months earlier, according to his widow and a widely disseminated email from the “Alahverdian Family Office.”

His announced death, at 32, came just two months after Alahverdian informed reporters at various media outlets that he had late-stage non-Hodgkin lymphoma and had weeks to live. His life as a crusader for children, now about to be cut short, was news that needed reporting, he insisted to a Journal reporter and editor.

And there's a LOT of that being done. Thanks to the Innocence Project. If you think we had/have the best judicial system on the planet, think again. It's not even close. I refer you to Boston, Mississippi, Texas, Georgia, North Carolina and on and on.

When they get to the vicinity of Iceland, look around for an active volcano and toss him in.
