Australia and New Zealand issue tsunami warnings after South Pacific undersea volcano erupts off TongaA tsunami warning is in place for much of Australia's east coast after an explosion at an underwater volcano near Tonga.
The Bureau of Meteorology said the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcano erupted at 3.10pm AEDT on Saturday, and tsunami waves have been observed as a result of the eruption.
Tsunami warnings were issued across much of the Pacific, including New Zealand, Canada, the US and Australia's Lord Howe, Norfolk and Macquarie islands.
In Vanuatu, the authorities have received reports of waves up to two-and-a-half metres high. Tsunami waves nearing 1 metre have been recorded on the Australian mainland.

To see if there was any action. Went down with the pups about 7am, tide rising, high at around 10am but not a very high high if you know what I mean. There was absolutely nothing out of the ordinary - there had been no surge or even large waves. All was calm and bright.
A smallish wave of about .12 metres was reported in Burnie, Tasmania; that's directly across Bass Strait from me. I was a bit disappointed!

(17,133 posts)8. It's pretty cool.
Haven't heard of anyone being hurt in the waves. I saw one video where you could actually see the shock-wave ripple out from the eruption.
