A state-wide code brown has been called for the Victorian hospital system after record-high hospital COVID-19 admissions and wide-scale furloughing of staff.
The measure, typically reserved for shorter-term emergencies like a train crash or bushfire, is aimed at relieving pressure on the hospital system and will apply to all metropolitan hospitals and six regional hospitals.
It came as 4067 of Victorias public healthcare workers were off work on Tuesday because theyd been exposed or infected with COVID-19, and was backed by the Australian Medical Association.
This is an accurate reflection and an appropriate response in these extraordinary circumstances because the health system is in much greater stress than has been publicised, AMA Victorian president Roderick McRae said.
It is important that the community understands just how serious it is.

Can't buy a mask anywhere. Hours wait to get a test. Things are pretty grim. I'm going for a walk.
