I started a conversation with a Trump voter about the attack on our capital and Trumps attempt to over throw the election. She responded, what about Biden raising gas prices, raising inflation, he is destroying our country. I angrily explained to her she is suffering from mass madness and she fell silent.
Most, if not all Trump voters do this. Say anything about Trump and they respond, what about this, what about that, what about this person, what about that person. That's madness, their brains are sick.
Mass madness is not unique to history. It's just the first time we have seen it in our lifetimes on such a large scale.

(7,808 posts)The best I've ever been able to do is about 3 or 4 words into my first sentence. They always jump in with their usual nonsense bullshit, waving their hands, shoving the conversation into insane territory and brainless talking points poorly expressed. In less than a minute, they haul in crap too toxic for a septic tank that has nothing to do with the subject.
It doesn't take long to realize that they are nothing more than robots shortcircuiting before your eyes while they insult you as they keel over.
No, they're mad and hysterical. And thoroughly convinced of their own superiority. It isn't worth the bother.
Argue with a fool. They will drag you down to their level then beat you with experience.

R's want to tune out anything they disagree with and laud the powerful politicians who say, do as I say and don't think for yourself. No kidding, they crave the powerful who they believe will bring order to their sad lives if they only follow their leaders. Cases in point: you don't need Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, masks, vaccines and more. You do need guns, flags, slogans (to replace thinking) and more.
Somebody tell me I'm wrong!

(4,865 posts)For example: In 1970, you could buy a new car for about $3500. Today, it is over ten times that amount. Who caused that to happen?
Or, just launch into another whataboutism thread. "But what about Trump's failed businesses?" Make it a total non sequitur.

(43,064 posts)and instead find ways to help them burn the madness out of their minds, in the same way an obsession can be desensitized by overexposure. Make them realize they don't know what they're talking about. Tell them repeating the same lies don't make them true.

People who change the subject realize they are trapped when redirected three times back to the original topic.
It's tough not following their avoidance techniques, but when you stay focused and redirect them, they will literally short circuit when they realize they are trapped and can not escape the original topic. They will get angry, flustered and will flee.
It's the funniest thing to watch. A doctor neighbor told me this and boy does it work. Almost always the 3rd time.

(9,670 posts)How many times have you seen a politician asked a question in a debate and the response veered completely away from the question, leaving the question unanswered?
Most people don't understand logic or proper debate. If someone postulates an issue and you want to attack it, you need to provide your own on-point evidence and argue why it prevails and your opponent's argument fails. That's a debate.
The righties play the "what if" game all day long, which is a total deflection from the original point. Until an actual debate is enforced and engaged, the bouncing ball will always end up in their court, and a new ball will careen back in its place. Guess which ball the media pays attention to?

(58,785 posts)a traitor and expects the history books to restyle it so her grandchildren won't be ashamed of her? Or maybe burst into tears at being called out and beg forgiveness?
The vast majority of conservatives believe we don't understand their values and believe a lot of lies about them. Both are true, so what's the point to proving what they believe about us are right? Searches for tips on discussing politics with people with different views turn up a lot of hits these days. Maybe check out "moral reframing."
Things have gotten to bad that I consider it a win if I can get across the simple idea that I have a moral basis for my position on whatever, and a double win if it turns out the other person shares that moral belief. Then stop there, in discovering that much agreement. Because no one ever changes his mind during what comes next.
That said, some months ago now I asked someone how her grandchildren were going to feel about her part in denying them the right to vote. It went about as expected. But she started it. And who knows? I've heard pigs have been seen flying, so maybe she woke up once in the middle of the night wondering herself.

(14,289 posts)in a moral sense. They still do it with their view on abortion, even if half-informed or ill-considered.
(I wonder whether they have tuned out the word wrong in a factual sense, now that they have accepted so many false beliefs about elections, Covid, Russia, you name it.)
Still, if they have any conscience left, stating your view that something is morally wrong will linger in the backs of their minds and nag at them for consideration.
I think the effect on them is stronger if we allow ourselves to be genuinely outraged and show it. They understand raw emotion and it seems to speak to them better than simple facts stated rationally.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)communication, but how many are? Yelling at sheeple wearing masks, trying to wake them up to the horrible government conspiracy they're part of, doesn't work for them.
The brain is a marvelous thing: most authoritarians can hold 100% conflicting ideas in their heads simultaneously and believe both. It's proven. There is something wrong with them. A lot of things. They literally do not see dissonance between their chosen professed beliefs and their chosen actions. And no amount of righteous anger directed at them will awaken them. They'll call the police.
Btw, tRump's followers actually hold many moral positions and tend to consider themselves THE moral people. They know they're loving parents, good caring neighbors, wouldn't steal a dime, etc. We're the ones who are so lacking in decency and ability to understand right and wrong that no one can blame them for giving up any attempt to talk to us or, often, refusing to associate with us altogether. All their friends have the same problem.
Not a simple situation. I try to treat others decently, even when they don't me. There will be an end to at least this degree of mass sociopathy someday, and we'll mostly all still be here. Like Germany after WWII.
Qutzupalotl
(14,289 posts)That does not work. And I didn't mean fake anger. Just show what's important to you with genuine emotions.
I mean show outrage at situations, such as corrupt officials. Let them see you and they are angry about a lot of the same things, and they'll stop and think for a moment. If they have something in common with you, what else might they need to rethink?
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)Sorry I didn't understand, absolutely agree.
My hopes for that have to be on the wobblier ones, more moderate conservatives who've been going along, but not passionately.
As for the more hard core RW authoritarians, probably thinking doesn't really enter into it, in that anything that conflicted with their image of and loyalty to their leader would be immediately rejected. And, boy, is it watched for!
I actually do as you discuss, though, with a neighbor here in FL; our common meeting ground I can move right to when I do have to talk to her is that Medicare should pay more for her healthcare. She's too far right (the "base" to even pretend common ground with her on political things. We talk about our kids and their kids.
Fwiw, I believe that people like her have been encouraged/trained over the years to be close to the worst political versions of themselves, that they have the capacity to be much better, because of those we knew back in the last century. We watched them becoming.

(34 posts)I currently live in one of the bible belt states....doing it for the money... You can not talk to anyone here about trump and question what he says or has done without being called a commie, a traitor. People will call you evil and tell you that you should go to church and listen to what the preacher says about trump and believe everything...it's crazy. They all think trump is really President and he was cheated out of the election by the commies or the illuminati, or some other group. I avoid politics here because they get down right hostile about it. A favorite site of my co-workers is something call Freerepublic. It has some of the biggest kooks there you have ever seen. It couldn't possibly be the oil companies taking advantage of us, like they always do. It couldn't possibly be something like this: "General Mills just paid a $300 million dividend to investors, bought back $150 million in stock to enrich execs and investors and pays its CEO $16 million. It makes $2.1 billion a year in profit. It is raising prices on cereals 20% and blaming "inflation"."

(8,907 posts)If we compare to 2019, we're pretty much back to normal, fiscal wise.
Comparing fiscal numbers between 2020 to 2019, is a valid comparison because Pendejo45 caused the downturn.
Comparing say gas prices, between 2020 and 2021, is not a valid comparison because we were pretty much locked down
to whole of 2020. So there was no demand for fuel but a lot of supply, so gas prices plummeted.
For example (based on EIA numbers):
Average price/gal. in April 2019 was $2.881
Average price/gal. in April 2020 was $1.938
Average price/gal. in April 2021 was $2.948
(NOTE: This is an average over the whole US. Some places had lower prices, others had higher prices.)
If you compare between 2019 & 2020, 2020 decreased by almost 33% over 2019
If you compare between 2020 & 2021, 2021 increased by over 52% over 2020
But if you compare between 2019 & 2021, 2021 increased by only 2.33% over 2019
Everything we are experiencing is due to Covid.
If Pendejo45 had done the right thing and handled this pandemic properly, we would not be in this situation.
Gas prices, shipping delays and inflation are due to the massive deflation we had in 2020, due to covid,
followed by the massive demands of 2021.
