Tucker Carlson's Heartless Solution For The Homeless Enrages Twitter

Tucker Carlson suggested Tuesday that social services for the homeless encourage homelessness and destroy nuclear families. But that wasn’t the worst of his rant. (Watch the video below.)

The Fox News host told policy makers to simply banish the homeless.

“You are a drug addict,” he said. “Get a job or leave.”

“Pull up your pants and get the hell out of here. Go somewhere with lower standards,” Carlson said. “Head for a place where politicians don’t care about their people, because we do care and that’s why we’re hauling your tent to a landfill and cutting off your checks today.”

Carlson took aim at cities for funding homeless outreach, including overdose prevention centers in New York. “Which in fact means helping the homeless get high,” he snapped.

Many, many homeless men and women are severely mentally ill, mainly schizophrenic. Treatment is difficult to get. Thanks to that great conservative god Ronald Reagan, hospitals and other facilities have been closed for decades, which has put thousands of people on the streets. Another large population, as the tweet says, are veterans, some going back to the Vietnam era. I thought veterans were deeply respected and honored. Guess not, if they’re homeless and need help.

7. In other words... Tucker Carlson is doing his job and getting the attention he wants.

That is Carlson's schtick. He propagates conservative and far right talking points to appeal to his core demographic, and piss off people who actually care about the wellbeing of other humans. He probably masturbates to the outrage, because it ensures his economic success which is likely the only thing that excites him sexually.

The reality is that the views that he expresses are held to varying degrees by both conservatives and some moderate liberals but when said in the cruel and heartless way he is saying them, will spark outrage. A lot of people, and not only right wing people, want the "homeless" situation to be out of sight but do not want to do what is needed to actually fix the problem. Those people are typically okay with funding some social programs, but would be on board with increasing funding for police, building hostile architecture, enacting anti-camping laws, and other means which do not really go "all in" on solving homelessness, but can push it out of the everyday view of people.

As you said, it would take coordinated response and it will take money. It has been attempted with decent success at a local level, and also, other countries like Portugal, have had decent success.

What we lack in the United States is the desire to address the problem and that is a result of attitudes that are engrained in us by religious fundamentalism. The poor and homeless are such, because they are weak and sinful, and it is god's just punishment of their idleness and wicked ways. To give them food, shelter, and opportunity is to reward their sin AND it takes away money from the rest of us hard working, god fearing people. That is exactly what Carlson is playing into. This idea that homeless people are subhuman, leeching off society, and taking resources away from the rest of us. He can get away with it because the network he works for approves of right wing framing, and his rhetoric, though on the extreme end of things, resonates with enough Americans that it can be framed as harsh language but painful truth.
