Robert Costa, the high-profile political reporter, is leaving his longtime home at The Washington Post to become a full-time television journalist at CBS News, where he will serve as the networks chief election and campaign correspondent.
The move, announced on Thursday, is notable as much for Mr. Costas stature as a sought-after chronicler of national politics as it is for his decision to depart one of the more prominent roles in print journalism. Mr. Costa, 36, gained attention for his Congressional coverage at the right-leaning National Review magazine before joining The Post in 2014.
Mr. Costa, who co-wrote the book Peril with Bob Woodward last year, has plenty of experience in television news. He served as the moderator of Washington Week on PBS from 2017 to 2020, and was a regular presence on MSNBC and NBC News programs from 2015 to 2020, where he was a political analyst.
There are no plans for Mr. Costa to host his own show. He is expected to appear on news programs across CBSs broadcast and streaming platforms and play a major role in the networks coverage of the 2022 midterms and 2024 presidential race.

During his stint as host of WWR, he repeatedly referred to his meetings 'up on the hill' with Repubs.

(267 posts)He also seems ( at least so far) to not be letting Trump allies off the hook. Compare his coverage to say, Chuck Todd who seems to come from a similar background.

(22,912 posts)Yes I have always noted that he seemed to have excellent access to Republican sources, no doubt that is his political background, but it is his access to Republican sources that makes him interesting. Hell, MSNBC has no trouble tapping into Democratic and liberal sources. I sometimes glean some insight from Costa that is hard to get elsewhere, and he has never come across as someone who views Trump favorably.

(32,634 posts)I have to say that the teamwork of Bob Woodward and Robert Costa in writing "Peril" has made a nice difference.
Woodward alone on his recent previous books, has been less interesting and involving. I think Woodward relied too much on his access to Chump which I found annoying. There's a lot more energy in this book, and I'm sticking with it to the end.
Also I've enjoyed Robert Costa's appearances on MSNBC, and I wish him luck in moving over to CBS. I believe I'll be spending more time watching CBS now.
