U.S. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is trending on Twitter after making an insidious comment related to voting rights, in which he implied African Americans are not Americans.
Prior to a vote to move the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to the Senate floor failed Wednesday, McConnell was asked by a reporter about concerns among voters of color.
"Well the concern is misplaced, because if you look at the statistics, African American voters are voting in just as high a percentage as Americans," McConnell responded.
A 19-second clip of the exchange was posted to Twitter late Wednesday and has been viewed nearly 1 million times.

(5,524 posts)But the focus on the racial offensiveness of it is getting in the way of the logical fallacy of what he said.
ie. the law isn't needed because things have worked in the past. But this law isn't about then. It is about stopping all of the changes that are being brought out now.
So it begs the question that if things are indeed hunky dory, then why is his party working to change things at the state level. One can only assume that they are unhappy that AAs are voting at the same rate as "real Americans".
That is assuming that his statistics are actually true which probably need fact checking.

(10,667 posts)when you consider for a moment if Blacks would vote at a higher percentage than Whites given equal access to the vote.
In McConnell's view, suppressing the Black vote until they voted at the same percentage as Whites would be acceptable.
At least, that's one of the fallacies he is resting his argument on.

McTurtle has so many other things worthy of criticism, why bother on something trivial (unless that is you assume he is speaking in code or some-such).
