A 73-year-old New York grandmother outsmarted scammers who pretended to be her grandson and said he needed $8,000 to be bailed out of jail-- complete headline

A Long Island grandmother outsmarted scammers who tried to steal thousands from her.

The woman from Seaford, who asked to be identified as Jean, told CBS2 that she received a call from someone claiming to be her grandson. The man said he was arrested for drunk driving and needed to be bailed out of jail.

"I knew he was a real scammer. I just knew he wasn't going to scam me," Jean, 73, told CBS2. "He starts calling me 'grandma,' and then I'm like, I don't have a grandson that drives, so I knew it was a scam."

The scam took several phone calls to play out and involved multiple unidentified males, police said in a press release. One person claiming to be a lawyer for Jean's grandson told her that he needed $8,000 to get out of jail. A third person called claiming to be a bail bondsman coming to collect the money.

She sent over $7,000 in several installments via western union. She eventually was reimbursed because there was a class action suit.

got a call like that about his "granddaughter." Since my daughter was 5 at the time (and my niece was 11), he panicked. But before he could do anything my mom got on the phone and told them to buzz off. Her grandkids were too young to be in jail.

It was the same exact attempt. "Lawyer" got on the phone. A young girl in the background saying her grandfather would help. Blah blah blah.

This woman was smart and got the police there. Good for her. So happy one phone scammer got caught.

One nearly had a heart attack before he found out it was a scam. Another (couple) were informed by their bank that it was a scam when they tried to withdraw the money.

The third led them on for a while, then told them where to go.

I would have made him meet at a public place, he now has her address.

When the caller said - Hi - this is your grandson Lon… - I was in an accident in Mexico -I immediately knew it wasn’t because my grandson just says Hey Grandma and I saw him the day before.
We live in NM, and the caller had a heavy NY accent. When - I said hey Lon…. (Grandson’s name) why are you speaking with a NY accent, the caller hung up. I think they get our families names from Facebook.

One of my neighbors almost fell for a women claiming she was another neighbor named Kathy. Luckily, she told the caller she would call her right back. When she called Kathy (back) - she learned it was a scam.

I won't engage them at all. I have talked to my grands and they know what to say if they are calling for help.

I personally know an 80+ year old who was scammed out of 70k, with this scam. And when she realized she had been scammed, she was destroyed..afraid to sleep alone at night..just ruined. Why would they allow a person like this, who destroys elderly vulnerable lives to be out of jail???
