The House select committee investigating the January 6 insurrection has been having conversations with former Attorney General William Barr, the committee's chairman said Sunday.
"To be honest with you, we've had conversations with the former attorney general already," Rep. Bennie Thompson told CBS' Margaret Brennan on "Face the Nation" when asked if the committee would go to Barr. "We've talked to Department of Defense individuals. We are concerned that our military was part of this big lie on promoting that the election was false."
The Mississippi Democrat continued, "So, if you are using the military, to potentially seize these voting machines, even though it's a discussion, the public needs to know, we've never had that before."
Thompson's remarks came in response to a question regarding text of a draft executive order that had been presented to then-President Donald Trump in December of 2020 to have the secretary of defense seize voting machines in battleground states.
Barr, who was a staunch defender of Trump during his tenure at the Department of Justice and pushed the administration's "law and order" message, resigned in December 2020 after rebuking the then-President's false claims about widespread election fraud.

I've said the same about Mike Pence.
They both knew all the plans, but said nothing.

(82,849 posts)Barr has a lot of practice and is really good at not understanding even the most straightforward questions, debating the common meaning of words, and phrasing any answers he gives in hedged language that would make an English gardener blush.

Just look at their position wrt stroznick's (sp?) deposition request against trump. They don't want trump to be deposed because trump will say he just told the doj to handle it, and that will open a huge can of worms for them. Something they don't want public.
The DoJ needs a lot of sunlight. Quickly. They are nailing the shutters closed.

(7,872 posts)He's covering his tracks and trying to stay out of jail IMO. He's also rendering unto Caesar what he cannot hope to keep only to himself.
Barr is connected to very dark corners of the RW conservative political universe. Some of those have not only great influence but deep pockets. Bill Barr is planning on a significant political future and working hard to keep those options open.
I suspect he's telling only what indicts Trump and his cronies. Meanwhile Barr is working assiduously to point investigators away from the darker corners he knows so well himself, like the plans and Dark Money behind our current conservative SCOTUS members, or just how far the RW Christian Nationalists have gone to infiltrate US Agencies and the Defense Department.
IMO he belongs in federal prison for having failed to inform Congress of the plot, among other crimes against the nation.
