(11,292 posts)are preparing to go to war with Russia (in the event of an invasion of Ukraine)? Here's mine ______
The OP is completely over the top - European history from 1914 not withstanding. Do you really want to hitch your wagon .. ?

(4,441 posts)And Putin knows it.
But what happens as things escalate?

(11,292 posts)will attack a NATO country? Is there any rationale for such an action? Is there a real scenario being put forward here? Or is this just 'dangerous times' bugaboo being pushed around?

(47,368 posts)and we know how that ended. Is Putin playing the Hitler card, hoping history repeats itself and other countries stand down?

(18,497 posts)Just wondering.

(11,292 posts)taking even one. But that doesn't change the facts on the ground one iota. You sidestepped the question - how many countries do YOU see going to war with Russia over the Ukraine? Crickets.

(2,962 posts)Not just the regular Army but citizens going into reserves.
Men and women both.
Military training with guns.
The citizens do not want Putin.

(31,965 posts)There will be no WW III over Ukraine.

(7,263 posts)No war - but BRUTAL Global Economic Sanctions will bring Russia to its knees by next winter.
We are talking almost every industrial country in the World. And Mega Corporations too.
These are not the economic sanctions your grandpap was familiar with either. These will be sanctions on steroids.
Putin eventually will be facing an internal Civil War if he tries to annex the Ukraine. Think Saddam Hussein and multiply by 100.

(7,408 posts)They are dependent on being supplied by Russian energy sources, natural gas for their power plants most of all. Germany shutting down almost all their nuclear plants and relying even more on natural gas has made this very tricky.
Tommymac
(7,263 posts)they tell me that their countries are all ready to stand firmly against Putin. They still remember appeasement and it's results.
NATO will stand strong and will prevail. No doubts at all.

(7,408 posts)Because if the EU gets cut off from Russian NG supplies its gonna be bad. Multiple articles the last couple of days about that issue:
https://www.wsj.com/amp/articles/germanys-reliance-on-russian-gas-limits-europes-options-in-ukraine-crisis-11642939203
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-01-24/europe-s-economies-have-more-at-stake-than-u-s-in-russia-clash
Tommymac
(7,263 posts)The first link is paywalled, and the WSJ is not exactly an unbiased paper of record.
Bloomberg is hedging bets in their article, it spins Putin's way which I would expect.
I did find this gem in the article though:
I'd expect the EU would also temporarily turn to other sources of energy, such as coal which could benefit the coal producing states.
Germany could delay the retirement of it's remaining Nuclear plants for a while. And it will spur construction of more Wind power and Solar Power farms.
The US and most sane Global Cartels will be assisting our NATO Allies in the EU. And Britain.
Won't be easy but stopping Authoritarian aggression has never been easy.
It's what NATO is designed to do.
Anyway, thanks for the links and have a good day. Made my case and moving on.

(31,965 posts)And they are allied with Russia. The rest of the Asia countries will ignore sanctions. As will the African countries.

(31,965 posts)Australia is not in Asia.
Kaleva
(36,292 posts)India is spending much to upgrade its military to counter China. Also India can restrict ocean traffic through the Malacca Straits where much of the oil China imports from the Middle East passes.
Australia is not in Asia but it is aligning itself with Asian countries that oppose China. As China doesn't produce enough coal to meet domestic demands, its imports coal from Australia.
Shortages of oil and coal would severely hamper industrial production in China.

(1,910 posts)Somehow the USA with 81 million Biden voters and a military that is 45% minorities is the same as what German Jews faced when they were 0.5% of the total population. And now god needs to 'help us' because the entire planet is going to go to war for freakin Ukraine?
Geez, got to be better than this.

(21,552 posts)the world just can't be bothered with this, frankly. covid has cost the global economy trillions of dollars, every major power is dealing with political strife from right wing lunatics trying to spread the virus... we enough problems here and while i support helping ukraine with materials, we just cannot afford the cost in money or lives it would take to kick Russia out. There is just to much to deal with here.
of course, the Democrats will be CRUSHED for letting russia take ukraine, but they would also be CRUSHED for going to war over this when so many Domestic issues need attention. As always, there is nothing the Democrats can do that won't draw fury from the media.

(7,408 posts)Putin is doing it. He knows we arent gonna go to war over it, and heavy sanctions would drive the price of worldwide energy sources even higher, hurting us here at home.
Tommymac
(7,263 posts)Putin is an authoritarian asshole who, seriously, is about to commit a huge overreach.
He ain't seen nothing yet. The West alone is going to KICK. HIS. ASS.
Sanctions will have his weak bullying ass facing a Civil War at home within a year.
