Liz Cheney responds to newt gingrich re: January 6 committee

@Liz_Cheney...A former Speaker of the House is threatening jail time for members of Congress who are investigating the violent January 6 attack on our Capitol and our

Constitution.

This is what it looks like when the rule of law unravels.

Trump is sending out surrogates to try to scare and intimidate Democrats from doing their jobs. The closer they get to the core of this mess, the more desperate Trump will become. I think he'll eventually try to stir up another insurrection, and if he does that, there will be a reason to take him into custody. He knows what's coming if the Jan. 6 Committee continues on its course, and he's going to think he has nothing to lose by starting a rebellion.

You'd have to go back way further than the 1990's. Gingritch was one of the architects of the modern, ignorant, and belligerent GOP. While there were still some halfway decent Republicans during the 80's like Jack Kemp, they were well on their way to becoming what they are today, back from when Reagan cheated to beat Carter. Remember, Nixon helped scuttle the Peace Talks in 1968 to end the Vietnam war to win the Presidency.

Conservatives/Republicans have been on this path for a LONG LONG time.

Remember that Cheney's own father told a Democratic rival to "Go Fuck Yourself" on the floor of the Congress.

That transaction lead to the selling of missiles to Iran, which was against the law, as Iran was a "state sponsor of terror" and funneling of money to the Contras in Nicaragua.

Reagan got us into a whole bunch of illegal crap.

in today's GOP. The GOP platform of the time read like the Democratic Platform of today.

Even so, Eisenhower signed off on the coup against Mossadegh in Iran that eventually lead to the Iranian Revolution. Mossadegh was duly elected and committed the great sin of trying to nationalize his countries resources from being continually exploited by British and American petroleum companies.

Iran could be an entirely different country today had the Dulles brothers not convinced Eisenhower that corporate profits had to be protected. As head of the CIA, Alan Dulles was the evil mastermind who turned Iran into a US backed brutal dictatorship under the Shah of Iran. No wonder the Iranians have never forgiven or trusted us again. We opened the door for average citizens to be brutalized, tortured, and murdered.

Don't ever make the mistake of thinking she's softened her conservative opinions one bit.

She clearly doesn't agree with the asshats and criminals claiming to be Republicans currently, and I agree with her completely on that. However, just because we have currently got a common foe it does not predict that she will ever be voting in agreement with Democrats on anything else.

Unless you plan to vote Republcan in 2024, you may want to hold off on saying you see Liz as your choice of candidates.

It might be worth voting in the 2024 Republican primary if Cheney is running and looks like she might have the slightest chance of winning.

Having a rational Democrat in the general election running against a rational Republican is much better for the country than a Democrat vs a Trumpist crazy.

And honestly if Cheney wins their primaries and looks like she's willing to purge her party of the crazies and put the worst of them in jail, it might be worth voting her into office just for that purpose.

The Peronistas in Argentina have kept their fascist personality cult going for nearly 100 years, warping their political culture. If we could stop something similarly long-lasting from existing in the US, it's probably worth sacrificing 4 years of outright control.

We have ways of keeping a Republican president from getting whatever she wants.

But we have fewer options when faced with anti-democracy fascists because you never know when they're going to resort to firebombing, riots in the streets, assassination, jailing their political enemies because of their politics, and all sorts of other things outside the political process.
