My office is now getting calls from folks who say they watch Tucker Carlson and are upset that we're not siding with Russia in its threats to invade Ukraine, and who want me to support Russia's "reasonable" positions.

I get 'ya. There probably isn't a single person on DU that would count themselves as an ally of Russia. Just republicans.

Republicans never were either, until they decided to submit to voluntary labotomies and follow Drumpf around like baby ducks. But baby ducks are cute, and don't want to kill people.

There's a reason all of Trump's meetings with Putin never had another American in the room. Only Putin's Russian interpreter knows what was exchanged between the two, and you can bet he's not talking.

I have nothing against the Russian people. It's their totalitarian leader I despise.

fuckwit to Russian so Putin could understand.

I'm sure Putin speaks English quite well, but there are colloquialisms he might not be familiar with. There are always interpreters from both languages in the room to make sure every nuance is perfectly clear, but Trump wouldn't have any of that, for the same reason he doesn't allow note taking, emails, or recording. He never wants to leave a trail of evidence for people to follow. So you know something shady was taking place he didn't want anyone knowing about. He's a crook and a half. Always has been.

He IS fluent in German, however. As a KGB officer, he was stationed in East Germany. I have seen the complex in Potsdam where he was stationed part of the time. The wall full of bullet holes where prisoners were shot is still there, close by. When Putin met with Merkel, and Schröder before her, he never needed an interpreter. I have heard his German on German TV. It had a distinctive Russian accent, but it was fluent.

I wasn't aware of any of that.

Those bullet holes in the wall must be a chilling sight. Then think about how many of those people were executed by order of Drumpf's best buddy.

Putin is not to be trusted on anything. Of course the right-wingnuts believe he's a wonderful man, and his Russia is their model for a new White American utopia. 🙄 Never trust a snake.

Study Exposes Russia Disinformation Campaign That Operated In The Shadows For 6 Years
June 16, 2020 Bob Allyn

For the past six years, an obscure disinformation campaign by Russian operatives has flooded the Internet with false stories in seven languages and across 300 social media platforms virtually undetected, according to new report published on Tuesday by social media researchers.

The operation, named "Secondary Infektion" by researchers, has sought to spread pro-Russian propaganda around the globe by sharing fake tweets from U.S. elected officials and conspiracy theories about the coronavirus. And it attempted to interfere in the 2016 presidential election. Researchers say it will likely try to spread falsehoods tied to the November election, too.

Ben Nimmo, director of investigations at Graphika, the research firm that conducted the study, said in an interview that the specific culprit within Russia remains elusive.

Why Fake Video, Audio May Not Be As Powerful In Spreading Disinformation As Feared
"We don't know whether it was run by the government, or associated with the government, or a group who wanted to support the government," Nimmo said. "But the overall tone and context makes it clear that this was an operation which was trying to support the Russian government and attack and undermine its critics."

Security officials at Facebook first identified the campaign last May, and since then, the tech giant and other platforms have been working to block the campaign. But it is so decentralized that it is still operating, though researchers say since it was exposed, the group's activity has slowed.
