Actually, the article says "Some experts suggest omicron variant may have evolved in an animal host" and "it’s probably more likely it was circulating undetected, in an immunocompromised individual." So it's just a theory.

In any case, we're about due for an encouraging announcement from Walter Reed. The army has been working on this for two years and apparently has what looks like it might be a universal vaccine against all forms of the coronavirus.
