Missouri doctors make discovery about possible cause of long COVID (WDAF-TV/MSN)

Becky Willeke - Yesterday 5:43 PM

ST. LOUIS – A Missouri Baptist Medical Center doctor and his team may have discovered a potential cause of long COVID-19. Their discovery could help those suffering from the chronic condition.

Dr. Leonard Weinstock, a gastroenterologist at Missouri Baptist Medical Center, and others found that mast cell activation symptoms were increased in long COVID-19 patients. Their work was published in the International Journal of Infectious Diseases.

The researchers say this is a problem for those who contract COVID-19 because when mast cells are activated, they can cause long-lasting changes to the inflammatory and allergic state of the body.
***
Weinstock is renowned for treating Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) It’s estimated that 10% of the U.S. population has MCAS.

"This brings up the possibility that what we use to treat Mast Cell Activation Syndrome patients may also help long COVID patients," said Weinstock.

however many wishes, one would absolutely that everyone in the world be at least as healthy as I am.

I never get sick. Okay, so I have allergies, which are quite annoying, and I did have a heart attack a year ago, but I'm 73 years old, for chrissake, and heart disease is rampant in my family. I'm constantly amazed at how debilitated so many people my age are. Horrified would be a better term. Okay, so I can tell I'm not 22 any more, but compared to most of my contemporaries, I am like a 30 year old.

72 and I run up to 5 miles 3 or 4 times a week. Plus I have a pace maker. In my small rural town, most of those 30 years younger would have a hard time walking that far. Most likely from good genes. My first 40 years, I had a very unhealthy lifestyle.

miles a day, 3-5 days a week for over 30 years, hiked, lived an active life. I inherited some good things from my dad (my bloodwork is enviably stellar, my BP tends low, my glucose and cholesterol levels are good), but apparently I also inherited his knees. I can't even walk around the block anymore. Hoping for a good outcome, and a chance to be active again.

I run in my dreams, though. Float like a feather.

And sometimes the pain is just too much.

When you're walking with tears in your eyes, at some point you wonder if it's worth it.
