Big Papi was the only one selected. Sosa, Clemens and Bonds also missed out.

(65,010 posts)He says that the vet committee is no cakewalk.
He gave a half dozen examples of players who got over 60% in their last year that didn't get 50% in the veterans' committee.
That route doesn't appear to be a sure thing.

(20,840 posts)However, it's very unlikely Clemens and Bonds will stay out forever. Indeed, they might be in within a year or two. Joe Morgan is now dead and it's unclear how the others on the committee feel about the era. Eventually the committee is filled with your peers and will push them in.

(65,010 posts)I also suspect PEDs although his name only came up occasionally.
But, it's a fact that his velocity on his fastball & slider both went up 2-3 mph AFTER he was 32.
And, his spin rate on all pitches went up at age 33-35.
Even Nolan Ryan couldn't do that! At 35 he was throwing 98. At 25 he was throwing a hundred. Like essentially everybody else, he slowed down with age. His hands were so big, he probably didn't lose spin rate, but it didn't go UP in his mid 30s.
Things that make one go "Hmmmmm".

Not so sure about Bonds & Clemens future admission.
Bonds was so good he really didnt need to travel down that road.

But he was friendly with the media, whereas Bonds was somewhere between prickly and an asshole (back in his Pittsburgh days the beat writers once voted him MDP -- Most Despised Pirate).

(10,127 posts)Not really a fan of either, but they were the best players in the game for a long time.
Shilling can suck it. But being an a-hole is not a disqualifier from the hall imo. There are plenty of grade-a assholes in that hall. Bigger a-holes than schilling with less accomplishments.

(65,010 posts)We have a pretty good idea when he started megadosing.
But, do we know how many of the "before" numbers were genuine? No, and maybe none.
What we do know is he was willing to cheat to put up numbers.
For me, that calls into question at least some of those supposed HoF numbers.

I don't really like the politics of sports millionaires. most are cheap ahole's and only care about paying less taxes which is short sided. If the fans can't afford to go to your games and buy your jerseys...you get the point

(1,654 posts)I remember back in the 70s when we lived in Connecticut and got the New York talk radio sport stations on radio. One of the talkers was also a sportswriter and was on the voting committee for HOF and made the statement that as long as he was a voting member Bill Mazeroski would NEVER be allowed in the Hall of Fame because of his series winning homer beating the Yankees. I was horrified that he would make such an admission, all because of the fact that he was a Yankees fan and he held that grudge because he felt that the Yankees were the better team and deserved to win. He of course disregarded the fact that Mazeroski's hitting and fielding numbers ranked him as a great besides that homer. That was eye opening to me about writers' fairness in media.
I followed the Veterans voting in the years they were considering Mazeroski and was so glad that he finally made it in his last year of eligibility.
