Remember ObamaCare? It's faded from the headlines recently, but it's setting record enrollment numbers.
President Biden announced Thursday that a record 14.5 million people have signed up for health insurance through the Affordable Care Act for 2022.
Why the increase? Biden attributed the numbers to increased financial assistance under the American Rescue Plan that Democrats in Congress passed last year. That law increased the subsidies that help people afford their premiums and also lifted the income cap to allow more people to be eligible for assistance.
"This did not happen by accident," Biden said. "The American Rescue Plan did more to lower costs and expand access to health care than any action since the passage of the Affordable Care Act."
The Biden administration also reversed cuts to outreach and advertising spending made under the Trump administration.

(2,220 posts)Ive been on COBRA from Hubsters job for the last year and a half. I had to go on the ACA for the nine months before I can get on Medicare.
Im sure if youre young and healthy, you can get the dirt cheap premiums. Not so for an oldster, though it is cheaper than what I was paying for COBRA. The real mess came when I had to choose a plan. The health system where all my doctors are affiliated only accepts three plans. Two of those plans included my PCP in network, but not the two specialists I see for serious health conditions. The other plan included my two specialists, but not my PCP, nor any PCP affiliated with that health system. I decided it was more important to stay with something that covered my two specialists, so I had to pick a PCP in another health system who I will only see for nine months before going back to my regular one.
Didnt they say we could keep our doctor? Ha!

(45,380 posts)but people think single payer is socialism.
I belong to an HMO which has plenty of limitations but at least everything is in network and I have low premiums, deductibles, and copays.

(25,952 posts)Still high, but lower than it was and I have insurance. It could be better (and here's hoping for continued improvements) but after not being covered for years until the ACA came along, it's such a relief to have it. Glad to hear more and more people are able to get coverage as well.

(10,162 posts)which has been a real relief for all of us. He had diverticulitis this past Fall with no insurance and racked up a $6000 bill for a few tests and some meds. He also had COVID which scared the hell out of us!
He's covered now, and thankful. We all are. He's considered an independent contractor.
