This man is invited on a TV show, but he has no clue why everyone suddenly stands up:

This #HolocaustRemembranceDay, I'm thinking of the children; their angelic and confused faces as they were shuffled along by their parents to the ghettos, the trains, the camps, the gas chambers. Genocide through the eyes of a child is so heartbreaking. #NeverForget

Today I think of the cousins, uncles, and aunts who did not leave Belarus with my grandparents in 1903. They faced the famines and tortures of Stalin, and were then marched to the camps by Hitler...never to return.

This horror happened but eight years before I was born. My family tree is asymmetrical. My paternal ancestors were murdered and lost to history.

We can not forget how goddamn easy it was to normalize this genocide carried out by people convinced that their actions were a rational choice...With the asserted approval of their God.

The horror is way too common. Kosovo, Rwanda, Azerbaijan, Cambodia, North America...All were killing fields in relatively recent times.

The realisation that WW2 ended only nine years before I was born became more.... influential? Pertinent? I'm not sure what the description is.

I lived in Scotland and England until we migrated in 1965. I remember DPs (Displaced Persons) in our town, and seeing their tattoos.

....for most post-war refugees. Many fanned out across the country, but just as many stayed in New York.

In our Brooklyn neighborhood we had several people with numbers tattooed on their arms. At 9 years old we moved to a Jewish neighborhood in Queens, and there too were refugees from the camps.

have to face right now!

What will we do if Trump's fascists take over Congress and the WH? What are we doing now?

We need to think about this now and decide what WE will do. Will we accommodate the smaller injustices in the hope that they won't get worse? Or will we put our feet down firmly in public opposition the minute that it starts, before it can get worse?

I suggest massive rally protests and civil disobedience at the slightest indication of any bigoted or racial injustice.

Watching it again brought a tear to my eye.
