I meet with Booker last year; he's appealing, but like Amy McGrath in 2020, I don't see a Democratic candidate being competitive in Kentucky.

(7,408 posts)McConnell beat McGrath 58-38% so Paul can probably expect a similar outcome.

(7,408 posts)I expect the polling to be off a few points in the Democrats favor, since enthusiasm and motivation for the party in power are typically less in an actual midterm turnout.

(6,376 posts)I think he's great, but I hope people don't pour a bunch of money into a race that's not going to be close.

(111,076 posts)He wasn't connected to the Democrats in Washington.
He didn't have a $100 million dollars.
He was a virtual unknown.
But, he still won.
Is the answer in the question?

(42,685 posts)Bevin was the least popular governor in the United States, with only a 33% approval rating in April 2019.

(1,184 posts)Particularly, Bevin picked a fight with the teachers, and it backfired.
Keep in mind that Beshear won by only a few thousand votes, though. Thank goodness those folks got to the polls. I can only imagine going through the pandemic here in Kentucky with both Trump and Bevin at the helm.

I think Kentuckians do not want much to do with Democrats that are too close to the Democrats in Washington, such as Schumer, Pelosi, and Biden. They prefer someone outside the present political circles. Just my opinion.

(7,408 posts)Turn out is lower than presidential years and even the midterms. In 2019 he got lucky the incumbent was very unpopular and even then still barely won. I would maybe expect it to go back Republican in 2023, but he still has a 54% approval rating, a tossup would be a safe bet this far out.

I wish that Beshear would run for KY Senate. He'd be awesome.
Let's face it - there's a large segment of the population in KY who aren't going to vote for a POC. Ever.
