If any RWNJ you know calls the bridge collapse "convenient" share this...

..well first I would add that it's not convenient for the thousands who normally cross that bridge daily. I know that area and it's congested.

Anyway, this was tweeted in *2018*

So are those cables essentially an added bandaid or duct tape like measure? themaguffin Jan 2022 #3

If any RWNJ mentions bridges, ask what infrastructure bills Trumpy passed and ask FSogol Jan 2022 #2

Knowledge of problem with an inadequate solution is a pretty easy case to prove for negligence.

As an engineer, that makes me cringe.

There really isn't enough context in that picture to know exactly what is going on. The only thing that seems obvious is that the cables are an afterthought put in long after the original construction.

I would guess that there are two of them making an "x". That is the only way they would work. My guess is that they were put in after the real steel cross braces were noted to be damaged but before they actually fell completely out.

In theory they would/could replace the bracing characteristics of the steel members but I don't like to use them. They only work in tension as opposed to the braces which can work in tension and compression. Even though they can carry the loads, they can be springy and ductile so they allow for more overall movement. Plus, they have to be tightened to provide that tension so they can impart loads onto the structure in ways that the static braces do not.

So yeah, my guess is that it was intended to be either a short term repair or a supplement added during a reconstruction.

A lot of that is assumption based on limited information in the photo but that is what my gut and 30 years of experience tells me.

Anyone can find a person tweeting it, but of course that isn't the same thing.

"Why couldn't he have been on the bridge when this happened?" It's just vague enough to avoid any problems associated with threatening the President. Aren't they clever? My response to their deplorable question is, "Because he never leaves Mar-a-Lago?"

I don't think that's going to go over very well with the Trump-bots. Which makes me sad. {Giggle}
