"Last night broke me."

1/Last night broke me. I've never imagined I would see such lack of care from politicians for people they represent, for people they supposed to advocate for. Covid should've never been about politics. It's about life & death. People are still dying! Nobody cares!

2/We have no capacity to care for the sick either from covid or from other things. We do the best we can. But we just cannot care for the amount of sickness with the resources we have. Everything is either deficient or delayed or short or takes time to be found or outdated.

3/Deficient of staff, or supply, or drugs, or blood, or lab tests. Ran out of amps with sugar (D50). Why check blood glucose if cannot replace it? Ran out of sterile flashes. Instead of 10 cc they use 3 cc flashes. One hospital has no central lines, the other - midlines.

4/Ran out of lab technicians & lab tests. Sent blood for a lab test to be done ASAP, didn't get results for hours. How much time does it take to get a result ASAP? Some lab results never come back. Blood may never be processed, or may be lost. Or nobody is there to do the test.

5/ Blood supply is low. Some covid patients are bleeding profusely. Last night brain bleed, bowel bleed, hemorrhagic shock from stomach bleed. Blood donation bus came this am to the hospital entrance to collect blood from dead-tired healthcare workers.

6/Where are the politicians? Come to bedside or go donate blood. During legislative session each state house & senate & staffers go donate blood, go volunteer in the hospital. Instead you are doing shitty laws to gain power, control, wealth.

7/Where are the medical organizations? Should be screaming at every media outlet abt the deep crisis we r in. Its not enough to write a statement & be happy about own performance. The disinfo doctor is being confirmed for state surgeon general position, no society speaks abt it.

8/Where are the reporters? One thing they do is they ask of what is the name of the hospital. Because they want a hot screaming story. IT'S EVERY HOSPITAL! Or most of them. No names. But all these are true facts. Lived by us. Every. Single. Shift.

9/Honestly, we are 2 years into the pandemic. Politicians f*cked the response in this country. We reached this point that its scary to be in need of healthcare because no matter if for covid or not for covid you'll get a very deficient healthcare.

10/You can believe in whatever you want to believe (vaccines/no vaccines/ivermectin) but no party can save you from dying if you don't get care you need when you need it. If we run around the hospital to find an amp w sugar water it means you may die even from low blood sugar.

11/Last night broke me. I had no moment to sit down x12 hrs. Several crashing patients, tons of procedures. Nurses & RTs were running around not having time to eat or drink x12 hrs. Some brought water & food for the shift & it remained untouched. Never ending Spring 2020 😭

I can only speak for labs, based on what my wife tells me (she works in one). Her lab is practically vaxxed and boosted (save a few for medical reasons - zero anti vaxxers). Yet half of the lab caught the Omicron variant and caused severe staff shortages. And the people in the lab are relatively unexposed to patients. For the people who go around and draw blood it's worse.

You are right that trying to characterize it with a single measure is doomed.

There are two issues (measures): severity of illness caused, and infectivity.

Omicron has very high infectivity, so it generates huge numbers of cases.

It's like A x B = 100.

A can be 5 and B 20, perhaps. But also perhaps A can be 25 and B is 4.

Right now in Oregon with a "mild" variant, the death rate for my demographic is five percent of those who test positive.

My county has the highest number of cases since the pandemic began. And the local school superintendent who is running for Republican governor just announced masks are optional at the school.

nails it. But I still ask what politicians made this disease politics? And how have those very same politicians been responsible for the continued ravages of Cocid among our populace? How long did FOX tell their viewers to follow the trump cult line? How many are still believing the RW's street soldiers, the anti-vaxxers? Anti-science, anti-progress and anti-just about everything else that helps our country to move forward into a new century united. TPOSFG took care of that unity we did have as Americans before he was dumped on us.

They don't care about how much their misguided & deranged quest for "freedumb" hurts other people.

They just don't care about their fellow Americans, & that's truly sad.

It gave politicians an excuse to prioritize the economy.

It ignores the overloaded hospital system, the stressed out and overworked hospital staff.

It ignores that death from a 'mild' virus is just as dead as death from a 'severe' virus.
Quoting statistics don't apply to individual cases. No such thing as being 2% dead. It's an all or nothing thing for an individual.

It allows those who should know better, to fight against preventative mask wearing.

Don't look at the semantics, look at the effects.

It's bad.

Get enough deaths, sick people, and the economy will go downhill anyway.

So much for 'Economy uber alles!'

Be safe out there. Look after yourself. Be lucky, be smart, and survive!

because it's so mild and no one's dying from it.
Even here on DU we saw irresponsible arguments that were basically saying that now is a good time to get infected.

Suddenly, you had one more group to deal with: Not only the radical anti-vaxxers and anti-mandate crowd or stupid Repubs, but also those, regardless of political affiliation, who downplayed Omicron from the beginning and ridiculed any calls for caution as fear porn.

In wartime, the country is supposed to rally around, donate blood, and step up.

I would like to see our Dem leaders rally the country to support our medical workers to make sure they have to blood (and other) supplies they need. Some good leadership for personal self-sacrifice is good for us all.

I'd encourage them (and us) all to roll up their sleeves in states all across the country and donate (if vaccinated and in good health).

To keep it from becoming yet another partisan divide though, perhaps our leaders should try to pair up with a Never Trumper when they go give blood. Dems should issue a call.

It's desperately needed and would be bound to be a morale booster for the medical community and a good example for the country. It's been a long time since most of the country had a patriotic reason to donate blood for the common good of others.

I'd like to. I did as soon as I had the second shot. Then stopped when delta blew up. Started again when I got the booster. Now I'm hiding out again because of omicron. I'm in a low fax high moron area. If it weren't for that, I'd feel it was safe to donate maybe.
