A Black FedEx driver says he was making deliveries in Brookhaven, Miss., late last month when two white men assailed him, including one who allegedly fired multiple bullets into his delivery vehicle.
The driver, 24-year-old DMonterrio Gibson of Utica, Miss., told the Mississippi Free Press today that he had just delivered a package around 7 p.m. on Jan. 24 when he saw a white pickup driving toward him from a nearby residence located on a connected plot of land.
In my mind Im thinking (the driver) is leaving to go to the store or something like that, but then they get extremely close to me and start blowing their horn, Gibson said. I proceed to leave the driveway. As Im leaving the driveway, he starts driving in the grass trying to cut me off. My instincts kick in, I swerve around him, and I start hitting the gas trying to get out of the neighborhood because I dont know what his intentions are.
I drive down about two or three houses. Theres another guy standing in the middle of the street pointing a gun at my windows and signaling to me to stop with his hands, as well as mouthing the word, Stop. I shake my head no, I hide behind the steering wheel, and I swerve around him as well. As I swerve around him, he starts firing shots into my vehicle.

Disturbing reenactment of Ahmaud Arbrey murder. Thankfully a better ending. Hopefully the guy and his son (Brandon) get thrown into prison and sued penniless. Only way these throw backs will learn.

(9,949 posts)Gibson said the Cases then followed him in their pickup truck all the way to the interstate. When he called police, he was told authorities had received a call about a suspicious person at the same address at the same time.
I said, Sir, Im not a suspicious person. Im a FedEx worker. I was just doing my job and they shot at me,'" Gibson told the Free Press.
When Gibson went to the police station the following day, a white officer reportedly asked him he had been doing anything to make them think (he) looked suspicious.
I felt disrespected at that point, because even if I did, they still cant take the law into their own hand, Gibson said.
According to the Free Press, Gibson said the police chief tried to emphasize how unracist the town (of Brookhaven) was, which seemed odd to me.
"Brookhaven has a history of lynching," the newspaper reported. "In 1955, civil rights activist Lamar Smith died after someone shot him on the lawn of the Lincoln County Courthouse in Brookhaven. Local police never charged any suspects with the crime."
Police chief Kenny Collins, who is Black, pushed back against allegations of racism in Brookhaven, according to the AP.
Were not going to have outsiders coming in trying to stir that up, Collins said. Brookhaven is not a racist, prejudiced town. You cant judge a town by the actions of two individuals.

(792 posts)I regularly see USPS contractors that really need a lot more in the way of identification, because they do appear to just be randoms driving around.
But now you have all the GrubHub and food delivery, errand running services, Lyft/Uber, and lord knows what. Any person imaginable might be coming into a neighborhood to do deliveries. So the assumption that someone is suspicious has to be completely thrown out.
So in no way does lack of decals absolve those nutcases. Packages are being delivered like crazy right now. Call it in if you must but keep the gun on the shelf.
I suspect these "gentlemen" will be put away for a good while.

(9,754 posts)I live in a fairly well off but ruralish area. The houses tend to be back off the road. I would be very hesitant if I were black to drive, ununiformed, in a nondescript vehicle, down the driveways to deliver packages to us and our neighbors. You don't know WHAT is waiting back there.
Fortunately, other than some early Amazon drivers using their own cars, the delivery people come fully wrapped in branded clothing and trucks.

(3,169 posts)What law??? They have to stop talking about "taking the law into their own hands", this is racism and criminal action.
These SOBs are criminals, nothing else. Gibson is working, he works for FedEx, or delivers FedEx packages, they are after him just because he is black.
There should have been no bond, they should have remained in jail, it is obvious these thugs don't care about going to jail because they know they will be caught, they just want to kill. Didn't these idiots watch the other idiots father/son who are going to jail for the rest of their lives? Racism is a powerful hateful sentiment, that you would give your freedom just to kill someone because of the color of their skin...the criminal mind works in very different ways.

Why in the world would the idiot manager want to wait and then file a police report the next morning! Im glad that Gibson went ahead and called and reported it himself. Otherwise that wouldve given some people time to discuss the incident and invent a story.

(14,421 posts)I am white myself, and I am embarrassed by some of the comments I'm seeing here.
Anyone who thinks a black man could run over a white man in Mississippi (anywhere in the U.S., really, but especially a deep south state like Mississippi), and NOT automatically be in very deep 💩, regardless of the circumstances, is living in a dream world.
Even a white man would have some serious 'splainin' to do in that situation (unless the the guy he ran over was black, of course ). A black man would just have to hope the "victim" didn't die, because that could mean the death penalty for him, instead of "just" decades behind bars.
Did that racist pissant deserve to be run over. Absolutely, but that is completely beside the point.
Gibson is lucky he had enough room to swerve around that asswipe. He made the most sensible abd prudent choice that was open to him (gtfo of there as fast as possible while avoiding harm to anyone, including himself), and he deserves our approbation for thinking clearly and acting quickly and decisively in an incredibly dangerous situation.

(3,529 posts)Dollars to donuts Gibson was making the delivery in the traditionally white section of town, which is why these two numbnuts felt it was their titanium oxide duty to make sure he wasn't up to no good. In a lot of cases the black politicians who manage to eke out positions of power like mayor and city councilmen are reluctant to upset the status quo for fear they will lose their own privilege and, in some cases, opportunities for graft. And even black citizens are often on that page because of the public service kickbacks they are getting from the black pols who suddenly have the power to push nice projects on the wrong side of town. The whites feel like they are under siege and over the years I've had at least a dozen of them in various similar towns solemnly warn me that it's just a matter of time before the race war goes hot. There are also usually some fairly affluent families in these towns, both old-money white and business-development of both races. They live cheek by jowl among the poor, who are encouraged to kiss their asses; this may be the yahoos attempt to curry favor among their own wealthy. The father and son will probably be gettin' a talkin'-to this weekend about comporting themselves publicwise (and getting them all on the national news, which nobody, black or white, wants).
Red Mountain
(1,599 posts)and forgive me if someone posted something similar up thread but we're doomed to repeat crimes like the Ahmaud Arbrey murder if the 'news' sources that assholes like these tune in to don't cover crimes like the Ahmaud Arbrey murder.
If capital punishment is supposed to have am extra special deterrent effect (for the record, I'm against it and don't think it does) how could it if nobody ever knew there was a trial, conviction and punishment?
Likewise for other crimes. I make a distinction here between a death sentence and life in prison.......for deterrent purposes they are functionally the same but they have completely different costs to society.
Either way....if these stupid bastards aren't seeing people that look like them go to prison for life they are much less likely to hesitate and think about the consequences before acting out their prejudices.
FOX is killing people.

(53,097 posts)Their defense story will be "He was driving slowly around the neighborhood in a suspicious van, and kept stopping at random houses and running up to their front porches. It was very suspicious. So I had to shoot first and ask questions later. I was just standing my neighbor's ground."

(14,439 posts)Next to Mr. Gibson jumping out of his truck nude and yelling "where's all the white women?", I can't think of him being in a more risky situation.
In the redneck's mind....
* Black man in known racist zone at night (yes, that's still a thing in some parts of the USA).
* Black man driving a rental van without proper markings around a neighborhood at night gotta be stealing shit.
* Mah wifey saw it out our window and got skeered and told me to get mah gun.
FedEx should also realize that under those circumstances, local cops are not likely to go after the rednecks and will often fabricate their own reality to avoid a "difficult" investigation. Trust me, if Gibson had ran over that white dude, he would have been lynched before he got out of the county.
Let's hope Mr. Gibson gets justice in this case and FedEx apologizes for their lack of foresight in addition to making appropriate changes in their delivery system..

A guy in a Fed Ex uniform in a rental truck in broad daylight would get questions in my neck of the woods, which is nowhere near the south. There was a time in my neighborhood when burglars would come during the day when no one was home, with a truck, and take their time emptying the house of valuables. Driving up in a random truck with a non-matching uniform would definitely set off alarm bells. Our Fed Ex guy, who happens to be black, arrives in a spotless truck and looks like he just stepped out of a band box in his very recognizable uniform. He is very obviously a Fed Ex guy on his appointed rounds, even to some good ol' boy.

(14,439 posts)Here in north-central Kentucky, even the USPS guys are delivering after dark just to keep up.
I personally feel this is a bad practice no matter the delivery company or color of the driver's skin and that it's being done to boost profits and "efficiencies". It invites violent confrontations and even robberies against the drivers.
