45. Embed means to integrate external content into another website or page. You embed something when you
place a block of code — called an embed code — into the HTML editor of another website. When you hit 'Save' or 'Publish,' the media then renders on the published page.

It sounds like posting a picture on Twitter and then embedding here could be the easiest way to post a picture. Is that true? I never post pictures on DU because the process seems so cumbersome.

11. Tweets & video are easy, images not so much.
Images have to come from a host that allows hotlinking (I guess that's the right term?) and they're becoming rarer and rarer. You'd either have to post images to someplace like Imgur (and I'm not even sure about that) or use Twitter as you mentioned.

However, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency had a ridiculous "both-sides" article about Jewish Russian oligarchs. I am Jewish, and hate posting this. The article, however, infuriated me.
Russia’s Jewish oligarchs and their donations come under threat of Western sanctions amid Ukraine war BY ASAF SHALEV MARCH 1, 2022 1:21 PM (JTA) – "Jewish communities in Ukraine received a $10 million gift from a perhaps unlikely source Monday: a charitable organization founded by three Russian Jewish oligarchs who are being accused of having supported the regime of Russian President Vladimir Putin. The donation is small for the three billionaires behind Genesis Philanthropy Group — Mikhail Fridman, Petr Aven and German Khan — who are together worth $21 billion. But it is significant in part because it signals daylight between them and Putin, who on Thursday invaded Ukraine and plunged the region into crisis. .... Abramovich has long denied that he is an ally of Putin, and his representatives told The Guardian newspaper last week that “it would be ludicrous to suggest that our client has any responsibility or influence over the behavior of the Russian state.” Current sanctions appear not to have deterred Putin as yet, making it likely that the West will seek to go further in pressuring the Russian president however it can. That leaves uncertainty for the recipients of the largesse of Russia’s Jewish billionaires." Much longer article than these excerpts at link: https://www.jta.org/2022/03/01/global/russias-jewish-oligarchs-and-their-donations-come-under-threat-of-western-sanctions-amid-ukraine-war |

48. So did I.
I am very familiar with the story of what happened there, but I knew it as Babi Yar, and I needed to confirm that Babyn Yar and Babi Yar are indeed the same place. What happened there was horrible, and it happened in lots of other places as well. As the German army invaded and occupied Soviet territory, they were followed by units known as the Einsatzgruppen (task forces, special action groups) that proceeded to carry out one mass murder after another. If you have the stomach for it, you can read more about this here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Einsatzgruppen
That Putin decided to bomb the Babyn Yar Memorial should fill all thinking people with utter revulsion. I can't think of any words that are even close to being adequate to describe just how despicable this is. ![]() |

Maybe because my major was initially linguistics and my mind goes fairly rapidly between one similar language and another, even if I don't know either one, I got it right away. Or maybe because I knew, from my Russian History course, that Babi Yar/Babyn Yar was in Ukraine (when I took the class it was still the USSR, yikes).

And Odessa massacre https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1941_Odessa_massacre All this is why it's extra Orwellian for Putin to claim he's "denazifying" Ukraine. Zelensky is Jewish and his ancestors perished in the holocaust. Putin is using blitzkrieg and siege tactics to starve out Ukrainian cities. |

28. He's right, you know
After WWII, the world proclaimed, "Never Again."
Although Never Again largely refers to the Holocaust, Zelenskyy is right. The Russians are bombing Babyn Yar, the site of the murders of more than 100,000 innocents, including Jews, Ukrainians, Russians, Gypsies, and so many more. Putin is desecrating a spot where his fellow Russians were murdered by soldiers of the Third Reich. We are relieved to see European countries providing weapons and aircraft. Unfortunately, we all realize the implications if the US and other nations decide to expand their support/involvement. Ukraine is not a NATO country, Russia has put its nuclear forces on alert, etc. Notwithstanding widespread moral and financial support in the US for Ukraine, I don't think the US has the stomach for another US military entanglement, however noble. (And then are the political implications.) But if all we do is stand by to await the outcome, then we have to admit that Never Again was only a slogan. When Never Again should have been a century-long rallying cry, it may turn out to have been a meaningless feel-good trope. |

34. Babi Yar by dissident poet Yevgeni Yevtushenko
Written 1961 to protest the USSR’s refusal to build a monument at Babi Yar, where 33,000 were murdered and dumped in the ravine in September 1941. The dissident poet reflects on that number, as he has just become 33 years old.
Dmitri Shostakovich’s 13th Symphony is based in part on this poem. (I am still trying to find an English translation that I can copy here. For something I remember so well, it is turning out to be difficult to find when I want to.) Meanwhile I leave you with this. |

36. Beautiful to hear, and transcription as well, thank you!
Poetry should be heard, as well as read. Each provides different aspects of the richness of words.
I have this in my copy buffer for those who can't play the video for any reason. ![]() Babi Yar By Yevgeni Yevtushenko Translated by A.Z. Foreman Requested by Ruth Blumenthal No monuments stand over Babi Yar, A sudden drop sheer as a gross graveslab. I am here terrified. Today I am As old as all the Jewish people are. Now it seems that I am an Israelite. There I am wandering Ancient Egypt's lands, And there I perish, pierced and crucified, And to this day bear nail-scars on my hands. And Dreyfus too is me, there I have been Sentenced, sold out by petty philistines. I am behind bars, rounded up and battered, I have been hounded, hunted, slandered, spat on, And demoiselles dolled up in Brussels lace Shrieked as they poked their parasols in my face. And now I am a boy in Białystok. Blood runs across the floor. Blood on the wall. The bar-room rabble-rousers run amok Reeking of onion and hard alcohol. Boots kick my body aside, helpless. Head gushing, I plead in vain with thugs of the pogrom To hoots of "Smash the fucking kikes! Save Russia!" And some grain-seller beats and rapes my mom. My People! Russian nation! I know, you Are internationalist at the core, But men with filthy hands too often boomed Your clean sweet name into a jingo roar. I know the good, the kindness of your land. How vile it is that, with no pinch of scruple, those pompous antisemites tried to brand themselves a "Union of the Russian People." It seems that what I am is Anne Frank Transparent as a fragile April branch. And I love. And I need no puffy phrase. I need for us to meet each other's gaze. So little we can see or smell, we who Have been denied the sky, denied the leaves. But we can do so much: to tenderly Embrace each other in a darkened room. "They're coming!" "Don't be scared. That's just the clamor of early spring. It is spring coming here! Come here. Give me a kiss, quick." "Are they ramming The door?" "Shhhh...no, that's cracking ice you hear." The wildgrass rustles over Babi Yar. Trees stare down stern, judicial, cold as day. All things scream silent here. Hat in my arm, I feel myself now slowly growing grey. And I myself am one all-out soundless scream For the thousand buried thousands in this char. I'm every old man shot in this ravine, I'm every baby burned in Babi Yar. No fiber in me will forget this ever. Let the Internationale thunder forth When we have buried, finally and forever, The final antisemite on this earth. There is no Jewish blood in me, it's true. But with their callous ossified revulsion Antisemites must hate me like a Jew And that is what makes me a real Russian. |
