If Russians Don't Believe What Is Happening In Ukraine...It's Because They Don't Want To
Just like the MAGATs in this country. It's an inconvenient truth aided and abetted by a willing/willful ignorance.

5. ...
I remember reading about how the earth would be if maggots did not exist, and it was very unpleasant indeed.....but we all know it would be the exact opposite without MAGAts. Yes indeed.

6. If they're like their parents, grandparents or older sibs...
They don't believe a damn thing their government tells them. Accessing news from the free world (haven't used that terminology in a while) is probably a cottage industry in Russia once again.

9. They know. They have to know.
It is no different here. If Trump had attacked Canada, he would have had a cheering section of millions. The rightwing news sites would be aglow with flag waving and guest generals talking about the mighty victories. Pictures of the Quebec telephone exchange disappearing in a flash of light and a puff of smoke would have brought tears of joy to eyes. War only becomes unpopular when you know that you are losing and that you have been lied to.

11. It is sooo much easier to believe what we want to believe, especially if the truth
is painful or even uncomfortable. None of us want to have our world beliefs ruffled. Honestly, most of us just want to keep our heads down and get through as easily as possible. Having to shift a world view is painful, to say the least. But as fellow human beings I believe we have a responsibility to our fellow humans to see what is really happening no matter how painful or scary.

12. I am struck by the parallels between our invasion if Iraq and Putin's invasion of Ukraine.
The Bush administration trumped up fake charges of WMD danger to justify bombing the hell out of Baghdad and other Iraqi cities, killing untold civilians. American conservatives refused to believe statistics about civilian deaths and backed the war 100%. I don't doubt Putin modeled the propaganda about his war on the US propaganda of the Iraq war. I know there are significant differences. Zelensky is a hero - Sadaam Hussein was a brutal dictator. But I, for one, don't mind saying "hey, we did this in Iraq and we know it was wrong."

14. Of Course I Understand It
but I also know that thousands have been demonstrating because they know and disapprove and they have have the same media access as the others. There are boundless apocryphal of people who have tried to tell friends and relatives in Russia and the reply if that they are lying. Quite the same thing has been going on here.

17. No, it isn't the same as here. Protests are illegal in Russia. The word war is being banned. America
is not a fascist state without freedom of speech and freedom of the media.

19. I Didn't Say They Have Access To The Same Media As Here
but perhaps my response was confusing. People inside Russia have been protesting by the thousands. Now, how do they know what is happening bd the rest of the Russians don't. I'm saying they are are more informed than they are letting on. It's why a Russian gymnast accepts a 3rd place award with a Z on his chest.

except those protesting?

20. True. Alot of those who go along with Big Lies are not
simply brainwashed (although many are) but are willing parties in sustaining the illusion. Nationalism is what Putin (and Trump) play to, ie ethnic grievance, which has always depended upon fictional narratives to justify evil.
Russians do however have limited information, so it would be interesting to see how/if their opinions would adjust if they were exposed to real news. |

22. I am sure that is true for many
Most of the people I saw interviewed in one cnn interview said they knew something terrible was going on, one woman at the end said all normal people there know what is going on, but they afraid etc. I am sure some magas are denying it here too, but knowing they are lying etc.

27. I heard an interesting comment yesterday...
...that after a few years, people lose the ability to think. They block out what they are not supposed to talk about and after a while, they refuse to even think about it. They have lost their freedom to think.
