AMPAS Launches Investigation In The Smith/Rock Incident

https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/movies/story/2022-03-28/will-smith-oscars-slap-film-academy-investigation

Following Sunday night’s stunning altercation at the Oscars, in which Will Smith slapped Chris Rock over a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith, the motion picture academy announced Monday it is conducting a formal review of Smith’s conduct.

“The Academy condemns the actions of Mr. Smith at last night’s show,” the organization said. “We have officially started a formal review around the incident and will explore further action and consequences in accordance with our Bylaws, Standards of Conduct and California law.”

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences enacted a code of conduct for its members in 2017 in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein sexual harassment scandal. “There is no place in the Academy for people who abuse their status, power or influence in a manner that violates recognized standards of decency,” the group said at the time. “If any member is found by the Board of Governors to have violated these standards or to have compromised the integrity of the Academy by their actions, the Board of Governors may take any disciplinary action permitted by the Academy’s bylaws, including suspension or expulsion.

1. Somehow I'm guessing that will be a contentious debate and consensus on action to take...

too fraught--particularly since Rock has declined to take any action.

Of course, Smith was in the wrong, but there will be a lot of tangential issues discussed, no doubt.

3. I am mad they let Smith go back to his seat

His Oscar should have been accepted by someone else on his behalf.
There was so much wrong with Smith's behavior.
There is so much heroism going on in the world right now and none from Smith.
He proved himself a spoiled, patriarchal brute. He made the Academy Awards all about him.
I will never watch anything starring, produced by, or directed by Will Smith again.

4. I already don't

He's never struck me as a 'tough guy' so it's laughable every time I see him try to play that roll.

I think his stuff is unrealistic crap based on shakey premises, with plot holes galore.

He's just not as good an actor/writer/director as he thinks he is.

And I think this event was staged... something about Chris Rock's posture, etc, doesn't smell right.

5. Smith, taped afterwards, seemed to feel awfully good about, himself.

7. I'm guessing AMPAS won't do jack shit about the incident.

The Oscars have devolved into an embarrassing trash exhibition.

8. As I read somewhere on Twitter, would he have done that if Rock had been Jason Momoa? No

Also, I've seen a lot of people saying it's good that he stood up when someone he loved was insulted, but he could have used his words (to greater effect), not his hands. It's not as though violence was his only option.
