Your vote REALLY MATTERS! Especially in local elections. We had a contested election for town clerk. 3 candidates. The vote count was 98-97-95. A really tight race! My wife and I brought our candidate over the line! Go Democracy!

(6,444 posts)this is a small town, mind, had lawn signs printed. The candidate we voted for seemed the most qualified (she touted herself as a systems person), whereas the other 2 seemed like they "might" be able to handle the job. One of the candidates has had family in this town for generations, so thought they were a shoe-in.

(73,505 posts)We've had two local elections decided by one vote in the past eight years. Every vote matters.

(6,444 posts)I had commented to my wife earlier in the day that i had recently read a post on dKos about someone who voted in an election where the outcome was decided by one vote. I thought our Selectperson opening was going to be the closest race... unfortunately that one did not go our way. REALLY big turnout for our tiny town. Thanks for the Rec.

(73,505 posts)elections, from local to national, for many years. I had seen a few that were close, but the one vote margin surprised me. Pleased me, too! The loser demanded recounts, which turned out the same. One vote. A few years later, the two ran again, and the second contest was again decided by one vote. Hence, I have told my friend -- who I talked into running for the position -- that he owed me for my vote putting him over the top!
I consider voting to be a right and a responsibility. So I thank you for reminding us how powerful a single vote is.

(68,455 posts)Well, we were about a mile from school...with some sidewalks...the kids could have walked but I know they wouldn't have. The reason for the lack of bussing was that the budget was cut because the assessment was not approved. The second-year we lived there in the fall...parents got out and voted. There was a large senior population who didn't want to pass it (wrong-headed in my view schools keep the property values up-not to mention educating the next generation) so we were on pins and needles... they had to go to the provisional ballots before we knew who won...well the assessment passed by three votes. There were three votes in my house and the weather was bad, we almost didn't vote. Thank God we did.
After that, as time went on older folks sold their houses to younger folks and eventually, they built a beautiful school which really helped my property values in Cortland Ohio...My house sold for the most money ever in my neighborhood...now it is more I am sure. But voting always matters, you never know.

(6,444 posts)for holding a candidate forum both in person and on Facebook live/Zoom. My wife and i were able to listen to the candidates answer questions and make our choices from there. Unfortunately the SelectBoard position went to the kinda-MAGA guy... we'll see if that causes problems down the road. One thing i realize is that all 98 of us can say we were the one to have got her the job! It's true, Voting always matters! Cheers!

(14,807 posts)While local (yours was hyper local), state, and federal may not be that close: although in a single AD/ED it might be; in extreme cases it could be by 2 - 5 votes; anyone of Democratic voters in purple areas could be them.
Every. Vote. Counts! .
(And in blue areas - I like the most blue votes in any race)

get attention from the red hatters.
