They should bring up how Abbott Labs used money to buy back their own stock , did they know about plant issues.i Was this problem known about and covered up before this administration took office? FDA forced them to shut down after babies died, and. There was a whistle blower. The same thing happened to a Texas Blue Bell ice cream plant , but there wasn't only two suppliers of ice cream. Maybe look at going after monopolies in critical areas, preventing this type of situation.

(2,343 posts)What happened to making sure monopolies didn't happen in this country? It used to be a thing. Seriously, I'm really having a hard time trying to think of anything that would make me proud to be a citizen of this country.
Fuck you, Lee Greenwood. Shove that stupid song up your ass.

Thus, there is no real competition in any industry at this point. It's all consolidated to a few companies.

That's where the Overton window is now.

(43,126 posts)That is absolutely true. Go research industries, pick any one. Go to WIki. Read the brands, consolidations, divisions split and sold off. Shoes, power equipment, refrigeration, commodities, oil & gas, socks, clothes, bedding, food ... and on and on. Every time they buy a brand they strip it and tweak the remains for more profits. It's what MBA's do. The products deteriorate in durability and materials so consumers need to buy them more often. They have us right where they want us. They have ground out inefficiencies but made us slaves.

(25,243 posts)The FDA's super strict rules don't help either. That's one reason I bring this up on mail-order abortion pill threads (Mail-order abortion pills from Aid Access come from India and can be seized at any time)
FDA regulation of formula is so stringent that most of the stuff that comes out of Europe is illegal to buy here due to technicalities like labeling requirements. Nevertheless, one study found that many European formulas meet the FDA nutritional guidelinesand, in some ways, might even be better than American formula, because the European Union bans certain sugars, such as corn syrup, and requires formulas to have a higher share of lactose.
Some parents who dont care about the FDAs imprimatur try to circumvent regulations by ordering formula from Europe through third-party vendors. But U.S. customs agents have been known to seize shipments at the border.
U.S. policy also restricts the importation of formula that does meet FDA requirements. At high volumes, the tax on formula imports can exceed 17 percent. And under President Donald Trump, the U.S. entered into a new North American trade agreement that actively discourages formula imports from our largest trading partner, Canada.
Americas formula policy warps the industry in one more way. The Department of Agriculture has a special group called WICshort for Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Childrenthat provides a variety of services to pregnant and breastfeeding women and their young children. It is also the largest purchaser of infant formula in the United States, awarding contracts to a small number of approved formula companies. As a result, the U.S. baby formula industry is minuscule, by design. A 2011 analysis by USDA reported that three companies accounted for practically all U.S. formula sales: Abbott, Mead Johnson, and Gerber.
Heck, I did not know that Gerber even made infant formula. It used to be only Abbott and Mead Johnson were the only brands on the shelves (1980s and 90s)
