(4,279 posts)I am right there with you. I've had severe hearing loss for years and I cannot go thru my day without closed captioning. Some theaters even offer the service. Thankfully it is becoming more available everywhere.
So you are NOT alone.

I dont care that youre a Christian. I dont care what the Bible says, like I feel like its a clown show, like, sitting here trying to decipher what your little mythical book has to say about these very real political issues, right?
I dont care if youre a Christian. I will fight for you to have your religious liberty and practice your Christianity. I believe in that. I dont believe in Christianity, which means that you do not get to dictate the way I live my life based on your religion.
I dont care what the Bible says. You have every right in the world, all those women who identify with your religion have every right in the world to not get an abortion; to not take birth control, but they do not have the right to dictate my life and what I decide to do with my body.
I dont care about your goddamn religion. Im so tired Im having nonstop conversations about what the Bible says. You live your life in the way that you interpret the Bible. Again, I dont care. but you dont get to take the Bible and tell me well the Bible says this and this chapter and this verse
I dont care. I dont care. I dont believe in it and I have the right, based on our constitution, to not believe in it.

(12,809 posts)... or, for that natter, democracy.
If an American enjoys the freedoms of democracy, they would do well to vote, and to vote against Republicans at every opportunity. And not just "vote against" them, but specifically vote in a manner that will keep Republicans out of office: the honest American must cast a vote for the candidate that is best positioned to beat the Republican. In the defense of democracy, third-party protest votes are simply not sufficient to protect us.

(5,840 posts)... take your Bible and shove it up your ass. You do NOT get to dictate the terms of others' lives based on your fantasies any more than I get to dictate the terms of your life based on my grounded reality. And that's too bad, because I'll bet a million bucks that my grounded reality is kinder and more fair and a hell of a lot more inclusive than your fantasies.
I am so FUCKING sick of religion creeping into politics. No, that's wrong. It's not creeping anymore. It's marching right in and the fucking SCOTUS is holding the door open.

(1,000 posts)which you should need neither of to be a decent human being? For me, you could stop at the Beatitudes, it is a framework for playing well with others. The rest is a folk history of the people of that particular area of the Middle East, seriously edited and adapted by the powerful to control the many.
Two thousand years of Kings and Popes, and sneaking around to check out scientific explanations for the nature of our existence, and the Age of Enlightenment brought us new ideas. Our Constitution is based on the idea that governance of humans should not be based on Kings and Popes. And now we have a fascist movement that would overthrow our Constitution and take us back to Kings and whatever "faith" that would support their rule of the few over the many. Instead of Constantine we were given Caligula to lead the way.

(45,427 posts)Has anyone noticed that we don't have a Church of America the way they have a Church of England or Armenian Orthodox (or whatever her family was before)? No? How about we use the constitution since conservatives claim to like it so much. What is this part right before their favorite amendment?
Feels like nonreligious people should not be prohibited from the free exercise of their lives since we don't have any law establishing Christianity as our official religion.
I've been told I'm going to hell so much that I look forward to the escape from these self righteous fundie extremists.

OMGWTF
(3,951 posts)Gaugamela
(2,496 posts)crops up in cultures all over the world, some more so than others. IMHO, misogyny is an unfortunately common pathological development in male identity and masculinity. To these men, masculinity is a kind of negation of the feminine. The biggest insult to these men is to be called a girl, usually in much more derogatory terms. They actively repress anything they deem feminine in themselves, and lash out and jeer at any feminine quality they might see in other men. Hence the prevalence of homophobia among these men, which is a reaction to the other great bugaboo of the patriarchy. Its a commonplace truism that that which is repressed on the inside and that which is oppressed politically on the outside are two sides of the same coin. During times of uncertainty and change people act reflexively and double down on their psychological defenses, and hence the rise of projection and the cult of masculinity, known as fascism.

(2,747 posts)Ive never done that. Yes I let other atheist know, but generally, I dont discuss it around people who might be religious.
Its time to stop being ashamed of it. Not talking about it helps them keep up the lie that most of this country is Christian.

(2,961 posts)I think all of us atheists should come out of the closet. I'm pretty much out. My Facebook profile proclaims my disbelief in gods. I don't mind telling people that I am anymore. When people ask me what church I go to, I say I don't. I'm an atheist. I'm just too old to beat around the bush anymore. I'm a rational being and I'm not ashamed.
Novara
(5,840 posts)I am getting more bold about stating that I'm a nonbeliever but I often hesitate "coming out" as an atheist. I live in an area of the country with a hell of a lot of churches and it's the fucking default around here. I hate it but I'll admit I sometimes don't have the energy for the fight so I often stay silent.

(46,166 posts)Discouraging voters not to hold their noses and vote for Hillary was a disaster. They tried to change their position when it started to look like Trump support was strong. But it was too late.
So she can stick her outrage where the sun doesn't shine. She ought to be apologizing for her part in getting Trump elected.

After a year of TYT telling them Hillary and Democrats were immoral corrupt fire-breathing hell-beast corporate monsters who only cared about Wall Street money and despised the working class. OF COURSE! (said in a Cenk bellow).
I remember that when he announced he was voting for Hillary he didn't allow comments, he knew what would happen. For him I think he thought it was just show business, but with Ana, that was something different.

(601 posts)It needs to be said over and over until it sinks in, which may very well be never. In the end, we need to win more people over to this point of view... providing democracy survives the gun lobby.

(12,863 posts)Religious freedom does not mean imposing your own religious beliefs on others.
If someone answers yes to the following questions:
Do you believe in God?
Do believe we are imbued with immortal souls?
Do you believe that happens at conception?
... then your opposition to abortion is based on religious belief, and you have no right to impose that belief on others.

(30,247 posts)I do believe in God and attend church regularly. I attend a Lutheran church that it's very progressive. We 've had more than one gay pastor and the first pastor to transition in the entire U.S. Synod. She came in as Pastor Rose and left her tenure as Pastor Peter. My church also feeds the homeless during the week, other than the shelter, the only church to do so in my town. We raised money for Ukraine and a host of other causes.
Having said that, I'm appalled that evangelicals and conservatives try to impose their beliefs on the rest of the nation.
I could say more, but speaking of my church, I'm going over there to help replant the church's little garden.
