Even when we were doing the duck-and-cover drills, we were far too young to comprehend the realities of what those drills were about. On the other hand, the prospect of the school nurse applying merthiolate to a skinned knee, that was worthy of apprehension. Even a fire drill was viewed as an orderly escape to the playground for a few minutes. It's damned frightening to contemplate the scarring on the psyches of generations of children and how those effects will manifest. Yet, for too many on the Hill, there's great haste to do nothing.
