Even Lee Frickin Greenwood Is Canceling His NRA Appearance After Uvalde School Massacre
SOMETHING IS HAPPENING?
Gov. Abbott wont be there in person and now the God Bless the USA belter has drawn the line, too. But Ted Cruz and Donald Trump are still going.

Lee Greenwood is the latest musician to pull out of a concert at the National Rifle Associations annual meeting in Texas in the wake of the Uvalde school shooting.
Greenwood directly cited the massacre that left 19 children and two adults dead as the cause of his last-minute pang of conscience.
Greenwoods uber-patriot anthem God Bless the USA is just the latest song to vanish from the NRA setlist after a string of other acts canceled planned performances this week. American Pie singer Don McLean pulled his appearance saying it would be disrespectful and hurtful for me to perform for the NRA in light of Tuesdays gun slaughter. The freewheeling Houston concertcalled The Grand Ole Night of Freedomalso saw country singers Larry Stewart and Larry Gatlin back out after the shooting, with Gatlin going so far as to criticize the NRA for not supporting background checks. Im a 2nd Amendment guy, Gatlin told USA Today, But the 2nd Amendment should not apply to everyone. Its that simple.
Singer Danielle Peck took a similar line to Greenwood in her cancellation, citing a respect for all of the families in Uvalde in a statement announcing her withdrawal from the show, which is set to take place around 270 miles from the scene of the mass shooting. Their cancellations leave Jacob Bryant as the only artist remaining on the bill.

(49,507 posts)Either he's had a political change-of-heart or he's playing for whoever's paying.
I went to his concert at Southampton College in 1975 and his sponsor was World Hunger Year. I still have the program complete with recipes for a starving world.

(18,261 posts)Country music fan who really liked Vince Gill until I went to a Concert. Vince came on stage and cracked a joke about Clinton taking all his money, found he was friends with HWB AND Barbara.
I never attended another of his Concerts.

(36,129 posts)Playing for the NRA is "disrespectful and hurtful" to the countless victims of gun violence full stop. But then again, money is money and Elton John did play at one of Rush Limbaugh's many wedding receptions, so I guess it's not that unusual to check their ethics at the door when a lot of money is involved.

(36 posts)why should it take another, yet another mass shooting for these performers to shun the nra?
i agree with dutch it seems like they are just avoidning some bad pr right now and will probably be back performing for and taking a paycheck from the nra next year.
i cannot give them any credit.

(19,729 posts)Never heard of him, but country isn't my genre. What kind of piece of shit is dumb enough to stick with the NRA soiree this soon after Uvalde? In the same state no less? A quick google search reveals he "grew up in the North Georgia mountains." Ah....MTG country. Figures.

(51,706 posts)Apparently he almost drank and coked himself to death - had a heart attack at the age of 19. I tried to listen to some of his songs. Half of them are about drinking, and half about his struggles with addiction. I find him even more unlistenable than most country bands, which is saying something.

(16,068 posts)They used to play it at military retirement ceremonies.
When I retired, they asked me of I wanted that throbbing toothache of a song played for the passing of the flag ceremony.
I initially requested American Idiot by Green Day, but settled on America the Beautiful by Ray Charles
Ever been to Stone Mountain, Georgia and their light show? The one and only time I was there they played it and I about barfed.
