Even dumber than Trump

I swear I didn't think it was possible, but Georgia's GOP candidate Herschel Walker is one for the books. His first response to the Uvalde shooting was "What I like to do is see it and everything and stuff.” Yesterday he proposed “a department that can look at young men that’s looking at women, that’s looking at their social media ― what about doing that?”

GEORGIA, don't do this!

One need not be highly educated to be able to converse or form understandable thoughts and comments. And, no, I don't think it is CTE. Walker was passed along throughout his years as is not unusual for "recruitable college or NFL" jocks in high school and later at universities. It is tragic. But, Walker was no more articulate at UGA. It just wasn't as obvious when speaking about an upcoming game or general issues regarding football. Stardom protected him from any perceived need to be educated or even to self-educate.

They were going to fly him to a basketball game during vacation, dog-pony and so forth.

Following Monday, Coach: "So how was Hawaii?"

"I didn't go. There was a hot party at the projects."

Another one go an offer to W.V. He visited but turned it down because it was too far to drive (from N.J.) to classes every weekend.

For the most part, the "dumb jock" stereotype is a myth. The large majority of athletes I've taught have been bright, intelligent, and genuinely interested in their education.

This is even true for the big-time sports that bring extensive coverage, like basketball and football.*

The biggest problem they face is time management. They constantly practice and work out. They struggle to squeeze schoolwork around their sports commitments. And whenever there's an away game or meet or match or whatever, they're liable to miss one or two days of school.

Many did, indeed, academically underperform other students in high school. But from what I've witnessed, they're just as committed to getting an education as everyone else. And the athletics program provides all kinds of resources and tutors to help them succeed. But they just don't have the time to commit themselves to their schoolwork.

The worst case I saw was several years ago, when the women's basketball team at my university went far in the tournament. We were all proud of the team, but I had two students miss nearly a month of class because of it. One was a team member, and the other was a member of the band that traveled with the team. Both were doing very well in my class until the tournament started.

*There are, of course, exceptions. I used to be enthusiastic about college football. That ended during my first semester as a TA in grad school, when a football player mis-spelled the word "rib" on a homework assignment.

...at Universities strikes me as poor priority setting.

My son attended his university pretty much on a very generous grant; it was not a school I could have afforded without that grant. He's now an engineer starting a Ph.D program. I have told him, and he agrees, that when the time comes, he needs to pay it forward. His engineering ability should be an asset to the world.

At the same time, our State University, invited him to the Engineering accepted student event where they loudly proclaimed that their accepted students were the best and brightest. They offered him zero dollars, the only school do do so.

Their football coach is paid over half a million bucks a year. They have a huge stadium. They just built a luxurious workout gym for the players.

This is a State University in a State known for good public schools overall.

In his first campaign, our Governor, for whom I voted - he was the Democrat - said that we needed to do something about how many graduates to our public schools leave the State after college. As far as I can tell, nothing has changed. My son is very unlikely to return here after graduate school.

Supporting our engineering students better than we support the football players of this unhealthy game would be a better priority.

I do a lot of work abroad. Colleagues in other countries can't wrap their heads around the fact that alumni donations increase if the football or basketball team does well, but not if someone wins a Nobel.

Lack of critical thinking skills, very poor expressive language skills, no situational or social awareness, impoverished language content.

Actually a sad situation but very dangerous to have this man become a political leader, he is not competent.

This man most likely has absolutely zero ideas for governing. He is just a front man for people like the Daniel family of gun manufacturers, the makers of the gun in the Uvalde murders, who will be the ones telling Walker what to think and how to vote should he be elected.

39. Idiocracy
Fri May 27, 2022, 11:31 AM
May 2022

If you haven’t seen it you need to watch it. Idiocracy was supposed to be a really far-fetched satire. It was not supposed to be a depiction of reality. But, sadly, we are living through it in real life.

The movie was wryly funny.

The reality is not very funny at all. All of the stupid ideas and the stupid stupid people behind them that we used to make sure stayed in the fringes have now become mainstream. The idiots have now decided that they are smarter than all of the smart people out there. They are really the smart people and all those scientists and doctors and people with degrees and shit….well, they’re a bunch of idiots.

Herschel Walker is a pure distillation of a idiocracy.
