How you can sponsor Ukrainian Refugees to come to the US
If you have the resources to financially support your Ukrainian refugee friends, it's possible to get them here quickly!
First hand experience: a Ukrainian friend and I just went through this process. It took us one week to get full approval. And most of that time was my gathering documents to prove my financial state. And it helped that I had copies of docs handy to prove my citizenship. Perhaps we just got lucky, but fyi it's possible. It was free. It was all online (for us) and it was fast. I'm still stunned. Some of the other processes have estimated times of many months. And they gave no hints about how long this process might take. NY Times Story (4/25) on the program: https://www.nytimes.com/2022/04/25/us/politics/americans-sponsor-ukrainians.html The Biden administration on Monday established a program that allows Americans to sponsor Ukrainian refugees and have them temporarily stay in the United States under a system known as humanitarian parole.
The program, called Uniting for Ukraine, is a piece of a larger initiative to temporarily resettle as many as 100,000 Ukrainian refugees, but migrants themselves cannot directly apply. Instead, a sponsor in the United States must apply on their behalf, and then migrants may complete the process after their sponsor is approved

2. Uniting for Ukraine -- other links
Using the wayback machine to get to the NYTimes article, this should work:

3. Thanx for this.
A light bulb moment for me. I prolly don't have the finances to sponsor a refugee, but will present all this info to our church community. Then in this respect, I would be able to assist with this endeavor.

5. That would be so cool!
I hope you pursue it! The form is a bit intimidating, but doable. And while an individual needs to be "the sponsor" they can include others that are contributing funds. I have no clue if or how much that might delay approval of course.
One hint for those that don't speak finance: when they ask for a "bank officer's" statement about your funds, they will accept computer generated account statements. You don't actually need to try and track down a human bank officer ![]() |

8. What a wonderful idea!
My grandmother's town in NC had a "sister town" in the Caucasus Mountains and since the terrible Ukraine exodus began I've been thinking that they'd be the perfect town to sponsor a family or families. Lots of communities would. I know that Ukrainians hope to return home at some point, but from what we hear, there will be little for them to go back to - and this siege is far from over.

9. Hi dear one. I wish I personally had the finances to fully support someone from Ukraine.
It came to me that perhaps in a group effort, our church community would be effective in this being a reality. I looked further on the government website and I think there's an application for this to be possible.
It is so heartbreaking and sick--the destruction done to Ukraine. I don't forsee how those leveled areas can be resurrected all that soon. Give that sweet boy a hug and smooch from me❣ |

10. Well, it definitely needs to be a community effort
I've wondered if my city might consider it. We're fairly small towns up here - I know two recent former local mayors, went to school with one of them - but not the current one - though I know he's a Democrat. We may be stuck with Stefanik, but seems like all the mayors in these parts are Democrats.
![]() And I know that you saw at least one of the OPs I posted in E&E about the devastating environmental damage to Ukraine because of this unprovoked war. ![]() And my Jack says "hi!" I worry about him since he turned 16, but he's fine. *knock on wood* Just stubborn! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
