I've come to hate cowboy hats

Yeah, I know a lot of you love them and I'll take much shit for this post.

As much as I've always loved Hollywood westerns, I've come to view people who wear cowboy hats as the equivalent of someone walking around wearing a tee shirt with a Confederate flag on it. I know that's unfair and does not reflect everyone who chooses to wear one. However, that's the way I feel.

Seeing those guys with big cowboy hats, outside of the school in Uvalde, Texas really pissed me off. Those hats didn't make me think of Alan Ladd in "Shane," or Gary Cooper in "High Noon." They just made me feel like I was looking at some "hero" wannabees with blood on their hands.

Sorry if this post offends you. And your hat.

But, I'm old. Old enough that I no longer care about living in Wisconsin and being a Bears and a Cubs follower. I can't say I'm a fan of either. But I follow their records, and try to know the names of the starters.

In the way way back, I wore a big brimmed xxx beaver felt to high school. I got mocked OFTEN. But then I had fulfilled a dream I had had since 3rd grade. I owned a horse. Actually, before HS was over I owned 4 horses.

And it's the damnedest thing. Before horses, girls told me they were coming down with the measles when I asked if they wanted to go to a movie. After horses, my saturdays with girls was so busy, I got saddle sore.

It was one of the great revelations in my life, and it had nothing to do with being a confederate or a wannabe movie star. That hat made it VERY easy for me to be spotted by strangers, female strangers.

Across southern Texas, from Loredo to Rosenburg, I encountered many real, live cowboys. From legitimately good and bad guys to "bohunks" who spoke no English. They were, like humanity, varied in sophistication and general demeanor. It was 45 years ago but they, like all Texas LEO's then and now, wore cowboy hats exclusively. I actually met a guy who said "howdy pardner" with a Czech accent. The remainder of our conversation required his daughter as interpreter. They'd been in Schulenburg since the 1860's. There were many younger guys who'd never even stood in a field with cattle but wouldn't be seen at Gilley's without their $75.00 Stetson and their $300.00 Tony Lamas.

How many people are that up on good manners nowadays? It used to amuse me that the carnies that travelled with the county fairs in Ohio, who most people think of as lowlifes would always tip their hats, and say Ma'am to a lady. I'd smile and say "Southerner," and they'd smile back and say how'd you guess, LOL, "manners." Really sucks when nowadays you show your self worth by how shitty you can act.

And it is a totally different situation from migrant workers or others who wear them for skin protection.

And if John Travolta hadn't filmed "Urban Cowboy" there, very few outside of Texas may never have heard of Gilley's, or perhaps even mechanical bulls.

Willie Nelson's songs, "My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys," and "Mama's Don't Let Your Children Grow Up To Be Cowboys," are classics which are loved by many, myself included. And the American western legend is treasured by many. Well, except for the native Americans who were massacred, had their homeland's stolen from them, and live in horrendous poverty today.

For some reason, seeing those guys wearing those big white cowboy hats in Uvalde, Texas, destroyed my "old west" fantasy bullshit. Maybe it's time we just left those antiques in the "legends" from whence they came. I don't know. After all, we're just talking about fucking hats.

The bad guys, the MAGAs, the Neo-Nazis, and every other fool who is missing the "humanity gene," is a threat to our country and all of our freedoms. The straw hat helped keep my head cooler. They have a purpose beyond riding horses. After a
while I went to baseball caps and now at 71 I have many small melanomas on my temples and
my always bare forearms. I wish I had worn the straw hat longer. In the intense sun, it is a tool.
