NYT on Romney: 'an especially dishonest candidate-simply turns up volume on lie +keeps repeating it'

Romney Versus the Automakers
Published: October 31, 2012 67

When General Motors tells a presidential campaign that it is engaging in “cynical campaign politics at its worst,” that’s a pretty good signal that the campaign has crossed a red line and ought to pull back. Not Mitt Romney’s campaign. Having broadcast an outrageously deceitful ad attacking the auto bailout, the campaign ignored the howls from carmakers and came back with more.

Mr. Romney apparently plans to end his race as he began it: playing lowest-common-denominator politics, saying anything necessary to achieve power and blithely deceiving voters desperate for clarity and truth.

What Mr. Romney cannot admit is that all this is a direct result of the government investment he would have rejected. It’s bad enough to be wrong on the policy. It takes an especially dishonest candidate to simply turn up the volume on a lie and keep repeating it.

...power at all cost. It's the typical rushpublican way...they can campaign but they sure can't, and don't like to govern. It's all about winning and doing whatever it takes, including a litany of lies, stoking hatred and fear. Willard has no agenda...no plans except one...to be President and not much else. Maybe he's driven by being the first Mormon president or cause he wants to open the treasury to be fleeced again and make this country into a kleptocracy. Whatever it is, it obviously isn't clear to any rational thinker and offensive to most.

The rushpublicans hae worked hard over the past 30 years to create their own "reality"...all superficial and artifical. Unfortunately, we're about to see that at least 40% of the electorate agrees and believes it as well. As long as the rushpublicans know they can bullshit and lie their way into power, they'll continue to do it. Here's hoping their lying and deceit will finally make them politically toxic...

the Mormon church will infest the entire civil service for a generation, if not permanently. Bush tried to do it with evangelical appointments to the DOJ from Pat Robertson's Jesus cult. Compared to the LDS, Pastor Pat's operation is small change.

we will prove once and for all that we are a banana republic, not a democratic one. I am too sick to survive four years of Worse Than Bush, which was 8 years of I Just Pulled A Coup De etat. Really. I honestly think I wouldn't survive. I can see through Romney like he wasn't even there. In fact, he is NOT all there. I just cannot believe we will elect him.

Romney and Repubs have simply amped up Rove playbook of attacking your opponent on their strengths expecting that the media would remain silent and Obama wouldn't be able to fight back strongly enough or quickly enough. But on this auto bailout seems Romney has finally jumped the shark

I suspect he learned at a young age how "gullible" regular people can be and has been saying whatever he has to say to get what he wants ever since. And of course nobody questions the CEO or he'll fire them. The lying for fun and profit and power is reinforced again and again until it becomes second nature.

Romney went through his litany list of lies since the start of his campaign. The only one missing was the Jeep lie, but then this was Virginia rather than Ohio. My thought is that "cynical" is too kind of a word to describe Romney. Romney has gone all of the way to cruel with his litany of lies. Indeed, about the only time he has told the truth is when he said he will not let the fact checkers dictate his campaign -- a rare moment of a liar acknowledging his lies.

sometimes the disturbing truth would accidently slip out of his mouth. there are many in this country who are gullible or just don't give a fek. and, that's what is so disturbing.

it seems some people in this country don't care about who's hurting them. they no longer care if someone is actually telling the truth, as long as that person is projecting what they believe.

but what does this say about our country? So many people are willing to look past someone who compulsively lies telling them what they want to hear? And the polls are neck and neck? Seriously, when people like Romney take the national stage and people let them gain so much power and fame with so many lies I seriously think it makes us look fairly ignorant or apathetic. At least I can understand the apathy part.

triggers in the Republican party. Will they admit their policies are toxic and try to come up with some new ones? Or will they blame Romney's flip-flops for his failure? Or will they claim Romney wasn't extreme enough and double-down on the lunatic Tea Party fringe?

I think it will be an "all of the above" situation, with the Republican party fracturing and key celebrity "commentators" arguing amongst themselves.
