Supreme Court just announced they're ending Democracy next year
https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2022/06/supreme-court-dangerous-independent-state-legislature-theory.html
They're taking an election-law case that would give legislatures the power to control all elections, meaning any Republican state can just block Democratic wins with zero consequences. It will effectively end voting rights.

That would be Subverting or Sedition depending if they were acting alone or part of a conspiracy. Let's ask Ginny.

6. Yes it does look that way.
If the Court votes that legislatures can overturn democratic elections, it will be a constitutional crisis. The Executive branch would have the right to arrest the Justices who voted for the nullification of elections. The Congress and the courts gave the Executive that power for handling threats to our government. Congress would have the right to impeach them. If the country.isn't already at war by then, it will be soon after.

15. It's about time for DOJ to charge some people.
All of this evidence is coming out for the world to see, and people are going to expect action very soon. If it isn't forthcoming, Biden needs to replace some people at Justice. I'm hoping that they've been waiting for the J6 Committee to show its cards before they act, but if it's clear that they aren't doing anything, then it's past time for them to be replaced.

11. Nah. They have figured out they are the leaders for life
They don't care who is President or in Congress. They are the ruling junta and they figure there's not much we can do about it. No need for a civil war, they already have siezed power. While we were all watching Trump's asinine attempt at a coup. they actually accomplished it.

38. It really does, doesn't it?
Civil War with a possible liberal genocide attached to it. This SCOTUS is setting this country off on an extremely dark and dangerous path. Aided and abetted by Fox News and Vladimir Putin. I have no doubt if these fuckheads were to get back into power that they'd go full Nazi. It seems like we're entering uncharted territory here.

32. If this actually happens, plus the Rethugs win/cheat/steal the POTUS and both chambers of Congress
in 2024, then the Blue States need to start to draw up secession papers. The Union is, at that point, null and void, is NOT coming back (to think it could be repaired without kinetic action would be to suffer from a most extreme case of normalcy bias-driven self-delusion), and the Blue States who chose secession rather than life under the whip hand of a Gilead style christofash authoritarian nightmare need to gird their loins for possible kinetic war. Biden is hopefully already at work coming up with a plan for the US nuclear stockpile. A huge inflection point will come when the Armed Forces decide which side they fall on.
Hard times, hard times I am afraid. |

17. Samuel Alito is the acting Chief Justice,
the arrogant racist, Nazi, fuck face, mouthed "not true" at the SOTU when President Obama said that Citizens United would allow unlimited dark money into politics.
We need to keep the House and expand the Senate and then expand the court to 13 justices. A very tall order. |

35. Nonsense. Neither Alito or Thomas are the de facto Chief Justice.
Alito is all the things you describe except that he's not the "acting" Chief Justice -- by which I presume you mean "de facto" -- Chief Justice.
During the just completed term, which Justice authored the most majority opinions? Roberts. Which Justice was in the majority the most: Roberts. Alito not only authored fewer majority opinions than Roberts, he authored fewer than Gorsuch and Sotomayor. And among the Republicans on the court, only Gorsuch and Thomas were in the majority fewer times than Alito. Roberts and Kavanaugh were in the majority 95 percent of the time, and Barrett was close behind at 93 percent. In contrast, Alito was in the majority only 86 percent of the time (with with Thomas at 81 percent and Gorsuch at 78%) |

19. I don't understand why they agreed to hear this case
All the other state election disputes have been kicked back to the states by SCOTUS. They don't overturn rulings by state supreme or appellate courts. Well maybe they have occasionally but it doesn't happen very often. More to the point, it hasn't happened with THIS bench that we have right now. They have refused to take cases, or they have ruled in favor of the state supremes every time.
But now suddenly - they've made an about turn. What the FUCK is going on at the US Supreme Court? This isn't funny, guys! ![]() ![]() ![]() |

22. Just my opinion...
...From my conspiratorial mind.
They are telling the DOJ that they may want to think twice on whether or not to pursue the investigation of "fake " electors. After all, the Court can change that rule very easily, they hint. More than hint, they are saying it out loud. The Court is showing its political side. It's a threat to the Executive Branch and the DOJ, in my opinion. The majority of the Supreme Court has joined the cult of lies. |

23. Agreed. Everyone seems to think they know how SCOTUS will rule but I'm not so sure.
As you say they've supported state supreme court authority to interpret state constitutions & state laws, & to throw that out, along with throwing out a fundamental & essential part of our democratic election process, seems like a bridge too far even for this court.
My gut feeling is they will say the independent state legislature doctrine is BS, they'll reaffirm federalism, & reaffirm the authority of state constitutions & state supreme courts in matters of state law. I hope I'm not wrong!!! |

21. this is why drumpf sent the terrorists to the capital on jan 6........
He wanted the state legislatures to throw out the results, based on this premise, but he needed more time. (Recall he keeps talking about Pence "sending it back to the states" )
The states were telling him their hands were tied, even if he had proof (which he didn't). This case is about paving the way to make sure if drumpf loses again in 2024, that the red state legislatures have the power to install him anyway. They just have to say "uh, fraud and stuff, i guess" and throw out whatever they need to throw out. of course that works both ways, blue states can do that too. Voting results would be nothing more than a "suggestion" to the state legislature on who THEY should declare the winner. Review and certification by canvassers actually familiar with the process and results would mean nothing anymore. |

Your headline read....."next year". Is that in 2023?
If we pick up a significant number of seats in the House and the Senate, we would have a lot more power (I.E. expanding the court and yes I know that President Biden is saying he doesn't want to expand the court but I think his wishes could change).
