The federal government will allow states to stop charging families for foster care

Why? Just Why? This is just cruel

New guidance from the federal government will make it easier for states to stop a controversial practice that, according to a 2021 NPR investigation, keeps impoverished families in debt when their child is placed into foster care.

When children go into foster care, there's often a surprise for their parents: Many will get a bill from the state or county for "child support," to share the cost of their child's care.

Parents' wages and tax refunds can be garnished
Most collections are made by garnishing the paychecks and tax refunds of mothers and fathers. In 2021, according to federal government statistics, nearly $96 million was collected from these parents and returned to the U.S. Treasury. States keep at least an equal amount. The biggest return to the federal government — $113 million — came in 2020 when state governments garnished the stimulus checks that were intended to help parents struggling during the pandemic.

Relief..struggling families, were, are, unable to get out from under, this could help them..but, it depends on what the states choose to do...some stated they welcome the change..they spend Time and $$trying to locate the parents...this whole situation, however, brings tears to my eyes..and tugs at my heart..for all the members of families who find themselves in this situation...

was in regards to this practice. Not the new guidelines. It’s downright cruel to do this to a family in crisis. Especially when we can give corporations tax breaks and bailouts.

The airlines got bailed out, they were supposed to use the bailout money to keep their staff. The airline travel disaster we are in, is because they did not do that.

It’s maddening that we can bail out the mega rich, but further add to the distress of a family in crisis.

Already struggling families..garnish meager wages..or the funding for people during covid...I just don't understand the cruelty...

I never understood why we bailed out corp..without oversight... all the theft...i understand they have gone after theft..but it always seems it is after the fact...wld have been more cost effective to have had checked b4 funds weere approved...be well...
