The Supreme Justices' homes are being picketed...too fucking bad!!

"Supreme Court called on officials in Maryland and Virginia to "enforce" state and local laws that, she wrote, "prohibit picketing outside of the homes of Supreme Court Justices."

"For weeks on end, large groups of protesters chanting slogans, using bullhorns, and banging drums have picketed Justices' homes in Virginia," Marshal Gail Curley wrote to Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin. "This is exactly the kind of conduct that Virginia law prohibits."

"Law enforcement, both federal and local, has been present at the justices' homes since the protests began. But the governors of Virginia and Maryland have previously said that responsibility for managing the protests belongs to federal law enforcement. Afterward, at Garland's direction, the U.S. Marshals Service "accelerated the provision of around-the-clock security" at the justices' homes, according to the Department of Justice. Still, the protests have continued, intensifying in recent days after the court's conservative majority handed down a series of major decisions that aligned with Republican political preferences on abortion, gun control and the government's ability to address climate change."

"On Saturday, a spokesperson for Maryland Gov. Hogan suggested there were First Amendment concerns with the provisions cited by the marshal, and he criticized what he described as the "continued refusal by multiple federal entities to act" on the protests. L"Had the marshal taken the time to explore the matter, she would have learned that the constitutionality of the statute cited in her letter has been questioned by the Maryland Attorney General's Office," wrote Michael Ricci in his response to Curley."

"Amid all this, our state and local law enforcement agencies have been on the front lines every day protecting these communities," he said. A spokesperson for Virginia's governor said that Virginia law enforcement would continue to assist, but called on Garland to "do his job by enforcing the much more robust federal law."

And if it becomes violent,

PROVES THERE AIN'T NO ANTIFA.

But once again, it proves that we have few friends to call in the face of tyranny.

Shoving down the doors? Defecating and urinating on the carpets and floors? Breaking out the windows? Erecting gallows in the front yard? Snooping through personal belongings, grabbing souvenirs, carrying zip ties and handcuffs? Riffling through personal papers? Disrupting the whole function of the household?

So they're behaving a whole heck of a lot better than the Trump coup insurrectionists?

What's the problem, then?

In 2014, the Supreme Court struck down a Massachusetts law that created a 35-foot buffer zone around abortion clinics in which anti-abortion protesters were not allowed to congregate. The court declared the restriction a violation of the anti-choice protestors’ speech rights.

vs.

The Supreme Court’s chief security officer has penned letters requesting that top Maryland officials direct police to enforce laws “that squarely prohibit picketing at the homes of Supreme Court Justices” following weeks of protests outside their houses.

I've always thought that getting in people's faces while they're walking into a clinic shouldn't be allowed. Would they have allowed it if they were calling other people murderers as they were trying to get medical procedures done? If they can do it at clinics, they should be allowed to do it at some fucking judge's house.

WE don’t like having our rights taken away, and we’re delivering that messaging in a direct and personal way. No home invasion or any such intrusion here. Nobody’s being assaulted, threatened with any bodily harm, or even touched. That’s what the OTHER side does.

WE are just NOT gonna be silent. And we AREN’T gonna give up OR go away.

DC is not lacking public spaces for demonstrations, including in front of the Supreme Court.

Yes, we know these have been peaceful demonstrations. And with mainly LWers, they're likely to remain almost entirely so; but they're implicitly threatening also just by being there. That's not my message.

Demonstrating at private homes crosses a basic line, in the same general category as not harassing the wives and children (and neighbors) of political opponents. A finer principle than just drawing a line at not throwing eggs and breaking windows, and I'd want a group I was part of to be able to care about it.
