Retired East Haven Police Dog Laid To Rest (story update)

Retired East Haven Police Dog Laid To Rest

Retired East Haven police dog, Bear, took his last ride in a Branford police cruiser to the Guilford Veterinary Hospital to be laid to rest Friday afternoon.

Bear, a German Shepherd, was purchased at 14-months-old in 2001 by the East Haven police where he met his longtime handler and partner, now Branford Police Officer Joseph Peterson. Peterson was an East Haven Police officer at the time, Captain Geoffrey Morgan of the Branford police said.

After returning Peterson to his home, Officer Atkinson announced over the police scanner, "Branford K-9 officer to East Haven, Bear, is signal 13 (code for out of service)," and the dispatch replied saying, "Roger, Thank you Bear for your years of service."

Peterson and Bear trained in Bronx, New York at the Municipal Police Work Dog Academy in July 2001 and graduated in December 2001. While in training, the pair watched as the planes flew overhead and struck the World Trade Centers on September 11th, Morgan said.
