(107,410 posts)Price is scarcely the main reason I am thankful I never smoked, but it is a damned good one. Alcohol is expensive now too, but at least (for most) less deadly.

(71,210 posts)Wow! My wife smokes, but we buy cartons. About $8 a pack that way.
We're in the fringes of Chicagoland.

(71,210 posts)People east of us cross the state line, because Indiana has lower cig taxes.
Wouldn't pay for me to get her cartons that way because I'd burn the savings in gas, and that was when gas was $2.

(10,411 posts)There was no way he was going to pay, "those god damned, motherf***ing Cook County f***ing taxes! F*** those motherf***ers"
And I am directly quoting.
He quit after fifty years after a triple bypass. Zyban did for him.

(725 posts)I never bitch about gas prices! And, I never smoke while filling up my gas guzzling SUV. That drives me crazy. $8/pack. BTW.

(33,643 posts)People probably complain about gas prices in other countries, even though they may also smoke cigs that are also way overpriced there as well.
Also, how do you know that the people who complain about gas prices ... also smoke cigarettes?
Do you have like a Venn diagram you can show us, with stats that illustrate the overlap between the two populations?

(16,246 posts)Last time I looked it up, I believe only 15% of the population smokes.

(5,521 posts)I know several people who have spent over $10,000 on lottery scratch- offs since it started in NC in 2006 and only a dozen times or so have they won anything and never more than $50 which they "reinvested" and lost most of their winnings.
Most of my friends who have blown thousands on lottery tickets frequently mention what new houses and vehicles they will buy when they win as if that is a real likelihood and not just a fantasy.

(4,252 posts)Pack a day habit since 1986. Hadn't quit prior to that; I'd dismissed health concerns, ignored the odor of my clothes/car/apartment, and gotten used to ashes any and every where.
But when the better half told me last spring "you known you're spending $250 a month on that stuff, right?" it finally clicked, and I snuffed my last butt. Two hundred and fifty a month. I felt pretty damn stupid right then and there.
For transparency: I immediately began vaping, but crunching then numbers, the cost for that comes down to only ¢.35/day.

(3,523 posts)Non smoker here. I remember friends saying if smokes get to $2 I'm quitting. It did. They didn't. But damn, $8. OUCH!!

(30,670 posts)smoke $11 a pack cigarettes or smoke at all. Lots of people are just having a hard time and need the gas to get to work.
