Pelosi: Taiwan trip critics "didn't say anything when the men came".
"House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) called out critics of her trip to Taiwan and suggested the “big fuss” may have something to do with gender.
At an event with Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen on Wednesday, Pelosi pointed out that earlier trips to the region by lawmakers like Sens. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) in April did not cause nearly as much controversy, especially in China. Pelosi’s trip was condemned by numerous Chinese officials, and President Joe Biden previously noted military officials expressed concern to the Speaker over her travel plans. “They made a big fuss because I’m the Speaker, I guess. I don’t know if that was a reason or an excuse because they didn’t say anything when the men came,” Pelosi said..." https://www.mediaite.com/politics/pelosi-calls-out-critics-of-taiwan-trip-they-didnt-say-anything-when-the-men-came/

3. Xi is using this as a publicity stunt to distract from China's financial problems.
Chinese middle class losing their life savings over the property sector crisis.
This would be a good way to distract them. And yes for sure it is gender related, Xi is angry that a woman is standing up to him. |

5. Agree on the property issue
The Evergrand bubble could start a massive sell off and trigger a recession Don't agree that is gender issue, it's out of concern for domestic issues (which you correctly nailed) IMO He would have done the same if it was a male SOH. The secondary issue is to put pressure on reducing tariffs which would be good for both sides and reduce inflation. |

15. Yes. But whether Xi cares or not about gender, it does fit into the PR stunt nicely.
China is not pro-female at all. So he might get some milage out of it.
Chinese males will not appreciate a female standing up to them. (It doesn't go over very well even here in the US.) But there are some stories that Xi is becoming more isolated, power focused, etc. He could be getting odd like Putin is. Who knows what is rattling around in his brain right now. Yes good point on the tariffs. Gee guys, world financial problems, global warming, serious pandemics, etc. If we all just cooperative a little maybe we could solve some of this stuff. |

8. She is also 3rd in the line of succession.
That position carries much more weight than senator or house member. One of the channels I watch on China mentioned that as part of the Chinese reaction.

13. When Gingrich went 25 years ago, he went to Beijing first.
That helped ameliorate China's hurt fee fees about going to Taiwan later in his tour.
