Magistrate judges are appointed by other judges in the district, not the president.

They are appointed by a majority vote of the judges in the district, and serve a term of years eight for full time magistrates; four for part time.
Furthermore, at the time he was named (2018) there were no Trump nominated judges on the Southern District of Florida.
