(5,351 posts)Republicans claim a new ranked-choice system approved by Alaska voters is some kind of nefarious Democratic plot
By IGOR DERYSH
Deputy Politics Editor
Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., fumed over Alaska's new voter-approved voting system after Democrat Mary Peltola defeated former Republican Gov. Sarah Palin in a special U.S. House election decided by ranked-choice voting.
...
Cotton, who has been discussed as a potential presidential hopeful, raged over the voter-backed voting changes on Twitter, an increasingly common Republican tactic when their candidate fails to gain the support of a majority of voters.
"Ranked-choice voting is a scam to rig elections," Cotton wrote. "60% of Alaska voters voted for a Republican, but thanks to a convoluted process and ballot exhaustionwhich disenfranchises votersa Democrat 'won.'"
...
Despite Cotton's complaint, Peltola would have still won under traditional rules because she finished first while the two Republicans split the GOP vote share. Voting rights advocates have largely supported ranked-choice voting because it requires the winner to gain a popular majority while traditional rules could allow more extreme candidates to game the system and win with only a plurality in multi-candidate races.
And of course Palin complained about the system in which the person who got the most popular votes won:

(15,536 posts)I don't like being catty (except with her, that's OK by me), but who is she trying to kid? Does she think those clothes make her look young? At some point you just have to admit you can't pull that look off any longer. However, she isn't pandering to the likes of you and I (meaning women). She's pandering to the MAGA guys.

(14,697 posts)RC helped her close the gap, but not by enough.
Palin lost in the first round. Ranked choice did nothing to hurt her.
What really hurt Palin, was Palin. In the end, it was the anti-palin vote that kept her out of office. Had she been any other person, the second choice votes of the third place republican would have gone to her, not the dem.
Chew it.

..for Gods sake. 😵?💫😵?💫
Ms. Toad
(34,059 posts)It is more likely contributed to her loss in the first round.
Voters were free to vote for their true first choice, knowing that voting for the other Republican wouldn't throw the election to the Democratic candidate. That may well have been what prevented Palin from getting above 50% in round 1, which would have eliminated round 2.
It is true that she "caught up" in round two, but round two is the equivalent of a second election, with only those who voted in the first one eligible to vote, with no chance to learn from your mistakes and campaign smarter, or round up more voters, not an adjustment of the cute in the first "election."

An easy grand. Wish I could wear heels that high again but heck, I would just keep them on a shelf as reminders of the good old days, lol. If I remember, when she was on McCains team, she went out shopping for those kinds of items and spent a fortune until McCain put the clamps on her.
On edit. My mistake; those would be Christian Louboutins, $900, hardly worth buying when youre on a republican politicians budget.
