July 10, 1858

...If they look back through this history to trace their connection with those days by blood, they find they have none, they cannot carry themselves back into that glorious epoch and make themselves feel that they are part of us, but when they look through that old Declaration of Independence they find that those old men say that "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal," and then they feel that that moral sentiment taught in that day evidences their relation to those men, that it is the father of all moral principle in them, and that they have a right to claim it as though they were blood of the blood, and flesh of the flesh of the men who wrote that Declaration, (loud and long continued applause) and so they are. That is the electric cord in that Declaration that links the hearts of patriotic and liberty-loving men together, that will link those patriotic hearts as long as the love of freedom exists in the minds of men throughout the world.

Lincoln's turn of phrase was a striking metaphor that had nothing to do with literal power cords, as electricity in homes was some decades away.

Thank you for the source on this. I am embarrassed I knew nothing of this speech, so - today I learned.
eta - nice reference to Ben F. as well.

No more holding several media outlets in the same town, for example.

No more than X # of media outlets at any one time

This has been an active threat to democracy for several decades now. 90% of major media is owned by 5 companies. The board rooms of these companies define the frames through which the propaganda flows. Very effective. Maintains the status quote. A handful of white men at the very top that surround themselves with managers and magistrates to keep it that way. Break up the media companies already, damn it!

#pedohitler is trending if that gives you any clue. They’re deeeeep into everything from how dare he use Marines to he’s declaring war on Americans to dementia and misuse of his office.

I hope it unites us more than it does them. That said, he was absolutely spit on and they deserve every bit of it.
