Former GOP rep: Trump gave Democrats 'major gift' with speech in Pennsylvania

Former Pennsylvania Republican Rep. Charlie Dent on Saturday said former President Trump’s speech at a rally on Saturday night in the Keystone State was a “major gift” for Democrats.

“Most Republican candidates don’t want anything to do with Donald Trump in this general election. They want this to be about Joe Biden and the Democrats, but to the extent Trump inserts himself into this conversation, he’s giving the Democrats a major gift right now,” Dent said on CNN.

Trying is as far as it would get. He doesn't actually take advice from anyone.

I think everyone who tries to advise him soon learns that:
1. He will only listen if you tell him what he wants to hear
and
2. Even if he does (appear to) listen, he'll go ahead and do exactly what he wants to do regardless.

W. gave us the Great Recession, which Obama cleaned up and turned the US economy around. Trump ignored the pandemic playbook thenObama team left and gave us hundreds of thousands of deaths, an economy in recession, a country not trusted by any of our allies but still hated by our adversaries, corruption never before seen by any President or his administration, and the first ever attempt to overthrow the government of the US. Biden spent his first year rebuilding relationships with our allies so we are no longer despised by most of the world, reclaimed all the jobs lost during the pandemic, passed some major legislation to address climate warming, drug costs, and infrastructure needs, and got rid of the most of the incompetents and the grifters from the Trump years.

That’s a pattern. Republicans screw up the country, Democrats come in and fix it until people decide they want change just for the sake of change and vote Republicans in so they can screw up the country again. Why do people not learn!

Although I sympathize with what Liz Chaney and Adam Kinzinger are doing as part of that Jan 6 Committee, they are right-wingers to the extreme, they vote for things that hurt people. So this crap of "republicans want it to be about Joe Biden and the Democrats" is pure BS, to vote for republicans is to give away the country to evil, these people want power and they do not know how to govern, they have convinced the fools that they are the best to "protect" the country when in fact when they are in power they invent wars and they often loose those wars, their invented wars are just to put money in their pockets and to those of the war profiteers, so this crap that if trump doesn't insert himself in the politics would be good for republicans is pure BS, Democrats have to take the masks of all these traitors, show the country that there REALLY are no good republicans left, and to tell you the truth, I think good republicans stopped when Teddy Roosevelt died.

populist rebellions against the wealth-serving Republican leadership who were promising to take away their progressive government programs. And still are, with SCOTUS an imminent danger.

Populist movements tend to be some mixture of progressive or farther left economics and social conservatism. Bernie's populism was heavily LW economics, of course, but to draw populist support somewhat more conservative socially than Democrats (a reason he couldn't offer AA what they required for their support).

tRump's populism promised to save progressive benefits for the deserving, but like Bernie also promised better national healthcare coverage for much less, and of course is strongly socially conservative.

In the last century, many moderate RWers were avowedly progressive conservatives, and they still want to be even though they let their "tribe" drag them far right.

There're some big clues here about who agree enough to someday become part of a workable, winning majority. Biden's call to identify MAGAs as a dangerous, extremist minority is part of a major, very carefully developed strategy to rebuild a majority.

although I'm the first to admit the terms are constantly confused in today's political narratives.

In reality, populism is a toxic and regressive, anger-based political impulse.

but to important personal interests is defining.

This isn't personal opinion, it's what researchers into populism have learned. Generalisms only that don't apply to everyone in a movement, but dominant.

Bigoted populists want populist leaders who'll discriminate and even persecute those they don't like. Populists worried about how to pay their medical bills and prone to considering themselves victimized (a whole LOT of those drawn to populist negativism, both left and right) want progressive healthcare programs.

And the word progressive is used in its original sense, not as a political label ("Progressive&quot , but to mean genuine, consistent supporters of the use of government to achieve progressive goals.

It's about Trump. It's always been about Trump. Same goes for his rag tag followers. They don't give two shits about Republican candidates OTHER than Trump. In fact, they dislike them only slight less than Dems. They can distance themselves and "scrub" their websites and Twitter feeds of any mention of Trump all they want. It won't matter. Without Trump on the ballot, much of the GQP support we've seen in 2016 and 2020 evaporates. Add Dobbs and the fascist rants and the soft middle breaks Dem.
