Trump Went Judge Shopping and It Paid Off in Mar-a-Lago Case

Trump got the judge he wanted in the Mar-a-Lago case: One he appointed. And she just gave him the first decision he wanted.

When former President Donald Trump summoned up years of bubbling resentment and sued Hillary Clinton and everyone else involved in Russiagate earlier this year, he naturally filed his lawsuit in South Floridahome to his oceanside estate.
And yet, when his attorneys formally filed the paperwork, they selected a tiny courthouse in the sprawling federal court districts furthest northeast cornera satellite location thats 70 miles from Mar-a-Lago. They ignored the West Palm Beach federal courthouse thats a 12-minute drive away.
Trumps legal team, it seemed, was specifically seeking out a particular federal judge: one he appointed as president.

Months later, Trump is once again suing in the Southern District of Florida, this time seeking to hamper the FBI investigation into the way he kept hundreds of classified records at Mar-a-Lago. Except this time, he got Cannon.
The strategy is already paying off.

(42,699 posts)And as the case discussed in the daily beast article demonstrates, the division in which you file doesnt determine which judge is assigned to a case. The case was filed in Fort Pierce but assigned to Judg Middlebrooks who is assigned to the West Palm division.

(15,322 posts)In every post about this issue, there is always someone on DU telling folks to "relax" because, "after all, these judges are assigned these cases 'randomly'".
Maybe a little transparency would be nice. I would likely to know the details of these "random" assignments.
Are they pulled out of a hat? Is that viewed publicly and audited? Does someone make sure that there is no stuffing of the hat?
Do they roll dice? Is an independent entity making sure the dice aren't weighted?
Is there a pattern? Like, does she gets every third case? Anyone know what the rotation is, because if you could time that, ...
Do they have all the judges pictures on a dart board and just shuck darts at it?
Maybe, they just put the judges pictures in a pasture, release a cow, and whoevers face gets shit on is the one?
Maybe judge Cannon should divulge her email and cellphone records to see if she "discussed" how random this assignment really is.
Maybe a Special Master could be assigned to review the courts correspondence, emails, texts and phone records leading up to her "random assignment".
I would like to see some of those questions answered, or at the very least, have some investigative reporting done on how this whole "random" assignment shit works...because if you believe this particular judge was randomly assigned this particular case, I have a bridge in Brooklyn I'd like to discuss with you.

(1,428 posts)This is an awful man, waving a book he hasnt read,
in front of a church he doesnt attend,
invoking laws he doesnt understand,
against fellow Americans he sees as enemies,
wielding a military he dodged serving,
to protect power he gained via accepting foreign interference,
exploiting fear and anger he loves to stoke,
after failing to address a pandemic he was warned about,
and building it all on abed of constant lies and childish inanity.
