If you deny womens autonomy as adult decision-makers and subject them to increased risk of trauma, grave health complications and death, they get mad. Very mad.

Afflicted by a combination of arrogance, insularity and shortsightedness, political analysts for months prematurely declared that Republicans would sail into power on a red wave, that abortion would be a nonissue and that President Biden would drag down his party. Just as they entirely missed the rise of MAGA voters in 2016 (only to then fixate on Rust Belt diners for the next four years), their prognostication appears to have gone haywire again.
Few analysts have captured the political effect of the Dobbs v. Jackson Womens Health Organization decision overturning the right to abortion as well as TargetSmart CEO Tom Bonier. In my 28 years analyzing elections, Ive never seen anything like whats happened in the past two months in American politics: Women are registering to vote in numbers Ive never witnessed, he wrote for the New York Times. Ive run out of superlatives to describe how different this moment is. This is a moment to throw old political assumptions out the window and to consider that Democrats could buck historic trends this cycle.
A recent Wall Street Journal poll provides a snapshot: 60% of voters said abortion should be legal in all or most cases, up from 55% in March. When it comes to which party voters trust on abortion, 48% said Democrats, 27% Republicans, 16% said neither and 6% said both equally. A total of 41% of independents said they trust Democrats most to handle abortion policy, compared with 18% who said Republicans were best.
Abortion is a if not the motivating issue for millions of voters, as the Journal poll respondents proved: When offered a choice of five issues and asked which made them most likely to vote, they put the Supreme Court ruling overturning Roe v. Wade ahead of inflation. Moreover, state abortion bans are grossly unpopular (e.g., 62 percent oppose a six-week ban), as are Republicans stances on prosecuting doctors (70 percent oppose) and limiting some forms of contraception (78 percent oppose).

(2,161 posts)I cant believe my daughters and granddaughters will have less rights then my wonderful wife. WTF do the Qpublicans think would happen?

(17,862 posts)I have two wonderful daughters. One wants children and the other one doesn't. These a___holes have taken away their rights and put them in physical risk if they happen to live in one of the Taliban states (Iowa is getting there).

(4,913 posts)You cannot take away rights from Americans. Especially a right that can save their lives. I knew women would organize and vote. Piss off the largest voting block in America and watch what happens. We get to watch it this November.

(3,578 posts)Gallagher was trying to bolster his listeners' sense of optimism by saying stuff like, "The Democrats want to turn the midterms into a Trump referendum! They can't run on their record! They can't run on Biden's record! Blah blah blah." But a lot of his callers seemed demoralized in the segment I heard. Despite how yuuuuuge the Trump rally was this past weekend, several callers said 45's "smarter voters" are actually outnumbered by way too many "stupid" Democrats (so much for 2020 election fraud, eh?).
It was very interesting, though, how nobody Gallagher or his callers touched the topic of abortion rights at all. I think they're all aware of the Category 5 Dobbs-sized storm heading their way but are too afraid to discuss it let alone mention it on air.
Good. I hope their pants go brown on Election Day.

(38,414 posts)I said "may" because some have a ..."clue" and most do not.
This one will make the difference in November's election. Fortunately for us, the decision was made months ago,
and there is time to get the word around. Taking away freedom to choose is an insult to most women & men.
As we move closer to November, there will be a few that talk against the Dobbs-sized storm to save their own asses.
This one..."Taking Away a Women's Rights to Protect Herself"...Is ........"THE ONE"
In October, some Republicans will start to talk, but it will be too late..Much too late.
By late October, it will be all over. & You can take that to the bank...

(3,578 posts)But if Republicans want the Mother of All Shitstorms, they'll get exactly that should they try to invalidate the votes of millions of women who booted their monkey asses out of office.

(36,248 posts)Might not be an easy thing to do with states like MI, WI and PA having Dem governors who would veto such legislation.

(10,135 posts)Because it was such a good get out the vote issue. It galvanized their base. It got all the Christians out to vote against Democrats.
And they were right.
But people here didn't realize that Republicans had gone crazy. The GOP gave up their most useful issue to piss off the Libs and crap on American women. The GOP is so far out of touch they really thought taking away the issue that galvanized their base was a good idea. They thought their base would be so appreciative that the GOP crushed the Libs and trampled on women that they would come out in droves to say thank you.
But instead all they managed to do was to hand over a galvanizing issue to the Dems. This is what happens when you are so out of touch with reality that you can't see the train about to hit you.

(6,783 posts)That not only puzzles me. It concerns me.
Men too.
So many men supposedly now voting women's rights on this, I always was, why weren't the men now concerned about their female family members, voting this way before?
The GOP isn't concerned. Is it because they think there is another wedge to bring these voters back?
Maybe they are just counting on voter suppression and states legislatures nullification of votes to make this moot?

(70,447 posts)I talked to a woman registering new voters and she had 500 new voters ( don't know how many will be legit) in 2 or 3 days. I have done that work and 10 or 20 in 2 days used to be good. Btw man are signing up too. People are pissed.
